Couple MS6 Questions

Postby Speed6Geek » Tue Nov 18, 2008 9:14

I've been doing some research on exhaust systems for my MS6 and I'm not sure what to look at. I definitely want something that's a little understated -I'm not interested in the systems that sound like a 4 year old after a 1/2lb. of broccoli. I wanted to throw out the CorkSport Resonated Mid Pipe to see if anyone has thoughts/experience with it. I've seen a couple of vids with some MS6's out there that have it and I like the understated sound on accelleration, but good resonation @ high-end WOT.

Would it be better to go TBE for back-pressure prevention, or could I get away with down/mid pipes for better airflow and sound?

I guess the last question I have is if any of you out there have experience with removal of the stock BOSE sub on the back deck? I've added 2 JL 12's and would like to remove the stock sub for a 'port' effect into the cabin. I've seen it's somewhat simple if the MS6 owned has the fold-down rear seats, but I've not found much information out there on HOW to fold down the rear seats. I've taken some time to browse the trunk and back seat, but am unable to locate anything that would be a 'latch' for that.

:)

I know eric did the fold down rear seat thing.

Remove the rear cover that goes over the back seat in the trunk. Once you remove that, get on your back in the trunk, and look at the brace that runs across the car where the back seat mounts. On each side, you will see a latch that opens the seats.

And as far as exhaust goes, you may not notice much of a difference in sound with a testpipe. For a subtle enhancement, Id look at Magnaflow CBE. You want to keep backpressure in the system, and with Magnaflow being 2.5", it does the job, and its not a fart can..

I did not think it was possible to fold down the back seats without removing the rear support frame for the car. I wanted to move my seats down to put a snowboard in and could not figure out anyway to do it. I read that the seats just did not go down... also does anyone have a ski rack on their speed6? I am think about getting one but i am not sure how it would look.

Cool! Thanks! I'll see if I can get that handled this weekend. I wanna lift out the back deck so I can pull out that Sub - bass flow is a little on the low-end through the seats and I'd like to get a bit more SPL in the cabin - I'm hoping opening the sub space will do it.

Sounds good. I'll research that and see if I can find some examples of it out there somewhere. I just brought up the CorkSport because of the examples I found and it sounded exactly like what I wanted.

EXACTLY what I'm trying to avoid - I hear that all too often on some of the smaller mopar/subie/hondas that I can't stand.

I can second the Magnaflow system. However I do suggest you get the tips cut off to avoid replacing your rear exhaust valances due to melting. I'd make a video for sound, but I've also got a downpipe and test pipe.

And yes the rear seats do fold down. They do have a cross-member support brace that will limit the usable passthrough space. I usually set up my snowboard standing up, with one end under a front seat and the other end supported by the rear seat headrest. Doing this also allows you to buckle the board in place. If you're gonna fold the seats down, that means you're not going to use them anyways. I ride a 161 size board, and I've had no issues doing it this way. Also, removing the internal cover behind the seats is nearly impossible without breaking some or all of the snaps that hold it in place.

Speed6geek,

I have the Corksport Resonated racepipe and used it with a Cp-e Dual exhaust system. It will give you a quieter, smoother sound. Now my exhaust was loud as hell with just a test pipe, but the Corksport did an amazing job fixing that. I would not recommend the Cp-e dual if you don't want drone. It has cost me probably another $400 to fix it(resonators, Corksport, Labor).

As far as Back pressure, I agree with Eric, I notice power curve changes when I go back and forth from stock to Cp-e. Stock lots of power down low/Cp-e tons at the top end. I have not yet done a turbo upgrade but it is in the future, so freer flowing will benefit me at that time.

The online videos of the Cp-e don't do it justice, it sounds amazing, just have to be able to deal with the deceleration drone and vibration.

They are both off the car for winter, if you want to come see them let me know.

Hope this helps

I may take you up on that. It's something I've been researching and I hear multiple schools of thought. Some say free-flow is better than back pressure and vice versa, and with my lack of experience in the boosted arena, I'm taking it all in stride. Based on the rides I see here, and those that obviously know what they're talking about, I definitely trust the people offering their input here.

It'll most likely be spring before I make any significant changes to my car and Exhaust is coming after some of the bolt-on stuff (CAI, BOV, etc.).

I just happened upon the videos and really liked the sound of the resonated exhaust. I don't want a 'fart can' as Eric put it, but I want something that sounds good and helps with air-flow for performance sake.

Now that I've been driving the car for a couple months and have gotten used to the clutch, I find I'm more interested in the top-end power. I like the way it pulls even though lately it doesn't seem to pull as hard as it did when I first bought it (could be that I've gotten used to it and want more). I have noticed that the power curve significantly drops off around 5-5200 on the tach and that's what I'm interested in increasing. I got tied up with an A4 2.8T on I-25 the other day and I pulled great until I hit the high end. :( Though, he did back off before I did and disappeared in traffic. :D

I'd definitely be interested in taking a look. Thanks Greg.

What's up guys. I just moved up to the speed6 from an A6 and I'm actually infatuated w driving again - tiptronic has nothing on a six speed clutch! So Brian, I'm curious, was that A4 a 1.8T, or a 2.8 non turbo that got a good look at your ass end? -or one of the newer 2.0T's?

I'm looking into doing exhaust soon as well. I know a great Denver shop that does custom exhaust jobs for prices that are lower than the exhaust kits I've seen - like the Magnaflow. And they will use Magnaflow resinators/mufflers, or whatever brand you want. They did my 66 lincoln, but I'm a little sketchy about doing a "custom" job on a speed6. Whadya guys think?

Is that exhaust shop Buds Muffler? I'd recommend them based on everything I've heard. Exhaust Pros are good as well, but won't do certain things you may want done. A custom job can be great on our cars, just make sure to keep your stock system in case you need to make a dealer trip.

The shop I've used is called BDM. They're a little smaller than Bud's, and I think more personal - you get to work with the owner directly - good people.

On my former Speed6, I ran a single exit CP-E cat-back, and can only say it sounded phenomenal. I liked the fact that it was a full 3", and single exit, as IMO, dual mufflers on a turbo 4 cylinder are for nothing more than looks. Although, I left the stock metal rings in bumper, so unless someone was looking closely, it still looked like the car retained dual exhaust.

Me personally, unless you really just like looks, I never saw much of a reason to run a dual exhaust on a turbo 4 banger. The exhaust manifold comes to a single collector point, where it connects to the turbine housing. On the back of the turbine housing, a single downpipe is connected lol. Going back, there's really no reason to branch it off into a y-pipe (especially is the y-pipe branches off into 2 smaller diameter pipes), as a properly sized single exit exhaust would be the most efficient way to route exhaust. Not to mention, you save the weight of having a second muffler.

With my old CP-E, to give some background, I had a gutted stock DP + test pipe, so there were no cats left on the car... either way, I saw negligible gains if any real gains at all. Honestly, on a turbo car, the added back pressure of a restrictive exhaust, to include cats, baffled mufflers, unnecessary resonators ect, are never a good thing. As the turbine housing/turbo is exhaust driven, the same rules that apply to naturally aspirated cars do not apply on a turbo car.

Freeing up exhaust back pressure, will allow the turbo to spin more freely, as well as take down your EGT's, which, high EGT's can lead to substantially reduced turbine life & make your turbo have to work harder to produce the same boost pressures. I must add though, that if you really want to see any substantial gains from a cat-back, you must eliminate the first restriction(s) in the exhaust system, namely the downpipe. If you're bottle necking the exhaust right after the turbine housing, which is evident when you look at the substandard wall & plate style mouth on the stock downpipe, realize a freer flowing exhaust AFTER that is not addressing the most restrictive portion of your exhaust, hence you will see minimal gains.

Now, get a good bellmouth or divorced wastegate DP in place of the stocker, eliminate both of the factory cats, while keeping the piping the same diameter all the way from the DP back... THEN add a free flowing cat-back, and there's when you might actually start to see a noticeable gains. I made the mistake of just gutting my stock DP, which yielded a whopping 3whp on MAC's dynojet... this was NOT the ideal way to bring down EGT's, and take down exhaust turbulence. As the stock DP tapers sharply right before the cat, then even with the cat gutted, you create a huge expansion chamber which tapers sharply right after... I have no doubts in my mind that a well designed aftermarket DP would have resulted in larger gains. Probably a good reason why I didn't hardly see any power gains from a 3" exhaust like CP-E.

Whereas in contrast, I had my STI dyno tuned with only a Cobb downpipe & pulley, running the stock exhaust.... then later had it retuned with only the addition of a Borla XR-1 cat-back exhaust & K&N panel filter.... with the added exhaust, the piping went from 2.5" to 3", it eliminated a resonator, and the muffler went from a baffled muffler to a more straight through type design (Borla's XR-1 design has an interesting 3-pipe design inside, more free flowing than stock for sure). The results? An extra 10whp & 26 ft-lbs of torque. That was with the same WGDC's & AFR's. Looking at a boost graph, it was easy to see where the new found power came from... while the car was still hitting about the same peak boost pressures, although you could see it wasn't tapering off as bad as RPM's went up, which could only be attributed to less exhaust turbulence/back pressure with the freer flowing exhaust, increasing the turbine housing's overall efficiency level. I.E. turbine housing was able to hold more boost up top without touching the WGDC's or peak boost settings.

I digress from the point I was trying to make.... if you want peak power potential, to include the area under the curve (which IMO, is just as important as peak power, if not more), I would advise picking up a full 3" TBE. If you had an EGT gauge, you would be astounded at how much it would take down your EGT's, helping your turbo to operate at a higher efficiency level. That's just my $.02
