CPE HPFPs

Postby edgeautosport » Sat Apr 02, 2011 9:14

What's up everyone? We just sent off 8 HPFPs to CPE to get modded. Let me know if you would like to reserve one. Should be about 3-4 weeks til they get back from CPE. $934.18 +Tax for CO. I'm only doing a $350 core charge so if you return your core, cost totals $634.18 +Tax.

Two questions:

1) These HPFP's are the same for both the Speed3's & 6's correct?

2) Has EdgeAutoSport installed one on either car before?

To answer question 1, they are the same for all Speed 3s (1st and 2nd gen), MS6, and CX7. Can't answer question 2 for them but it only took me about 30 min to install, very easy. Though you do get gas on your hands, heh.

Sorry I don't check CMZC often enough. It fits both cars. We haven't put it on our car yet. Our car was totaled back in August 2010 and was just replaced about a month ago with another MS3 but one year newer. We'll put one on this summer.

Sorry if this question is dumb, but I don't frequent the big Mazda forums, so I'm not up on all the mods for the MS3, but at what point in modifications will this pump be needed? Big turbo? Basic bolt-ons? And what's done to it to justify almost $650 just to have a stock pump modded?

I think it's for big turbo but also for people who have failing fuel pumps.

It really varies. Some people have problems with their stock pump with just an intake. I never had problems with my stock pump but swapped mine out when I did full bolt-ons as a preventative measure. All that's done to it is different internals with tighter tolerances that increase the fuel pressure and the consistency of that pressure. Honestly I don't think it's worth the $650 that CP-E charges, which is why I bought a PTP pump for around $380, but they're not around anymore and some people did have issues with theirs. I never had any issues with mine.

Really though you could just run the stock pump as long as you have a Dashhawk or something to monitor your DI fuel pressure so you can see if it's dropping. Once it starts dropping below 1600psi or so at WOT (like majorly dropping to 800 or below), then you know you need a new pump.

I haven't done a single mod to my MS3, and this is why. As you know, being a SRT-4 owner, we're kinda spoiled because generally, the price of most mods is fairly inexpensive. When I first bought my MS3 back in 07, it seemed like everything was at least twice as much. I attributed it to the car being new, and the parts were including the cost of development. I'd hoped the prices of stuff would drop over time. I guess that hasn't really happened.

Example: For the price of ONLY MODIFYING my stock fuel pump, I can get a Full Blown dual fuel pump hanger with dual Walbro 255s for my SRT-4. Maybe I'm not used to modding Jap cars, but it just seems excessive.

Hey guys, its been a while since i've been on here.

I agree with Dommo G...close to 700$ for a fuel pump?!. Theres cheaper ways to upgrade the fuel system on this car, even if u just install an inline walbro 255. If im paying that much for a fuel pump, that b**** better be rated for 1000hp+.

Walbro 255 won't help you on this car, at least not when you only have a few bolt-ons. Everything has to go through the HPFP. The pressure coming out of the tank is something like 40psi. The pressure coming out of the HPFP at WOT is 1600-2000psi. The problem is not maxing out the in tank pump. The problem is the HPFP not being able to keep up.

Honestly, I would just install the bolt-ons you're planning on installing and see how it goes. Make sure you're monitoring your DI fuel pressure and as long as it isn't dipping on you, then you don't need the upgraded pump. If you end up needing a pump, you can always try finding a used one from someone that is parting out, or I'm pretty sure you can still just buy the internals from a couple different vendors and modify your own pump yourself. I think the internals were under $200. I just didn't trust myself to not screw it up and at the time I was able to get a pump for $380 after core return.

But yea, i know exactly what you mean about mods being more expensive. I got a full turboback for my SRT-4 for like $400. Granted it was used, but still. You can barely get a used downpipe alone for the MS3 for that. New 5.0 mods are crazy expensive too. $300+ just for an intake. Headers are almost all $1k and up. Some catbacks are $900+. It's ridiculous.

And it's not even that you're buying a pump, you're just paying to modify your own pump.

To be fair, CP-E only does the best work and it's guaranteed for life. I never hear of anyone getting bad CP-E parts ever.

What other MS3 HPFP rebuilds are there. I found out the parts are interchangeable with some VAG cars and wanted to see if they are any cheaper through Mazda part sites. i.e. how much is KMD or Autotech selling them to the MS3 crowd? etc....
