Great -- Another Problem

I have a TSB out for that damn purge valve and they won't fix it for free at the dealership. It's a known problem with 2004 Mazda3's and they won't do a damn thing about it since I'm not under warranty. I'm not surprised Chris can't get his TSB fixed b/c of my issue with Mazda.
2004 Mazda3s Hatchback: Totalled
2002 Audi A4 Avant: Sold
2013 Subaru WRX 5-door: Stage 1

I guess the question is whether or not he has a case if the TSB came out while he was under warranty and it wasn't fixed. Ususally when I take my car in for service, they let me know about any TSB that are out on my car and schedule the repair. It looks like this may have been missed by Mazda and could use it as potential leverage in getting them to repair. It couldn't hurt to try.

Well this one says SPECIFICALLY that it is only to be applied IF the customer complains of symptoms while under warranty.

Yep, but oh well. $250 isn't the end of the world. And I'm still not 100% certain it's the timing chain sound -- just sounds different. And check this:
If the car sits all night, and it gets cold, it'll make the sound on startup. Or if I let it sit in the shade of my garage all day. But when it sits in the sun at work fro 8 hours and I start it, there's no noise. The timing chain should NOT be affected by sitting in the sun. That said, I don't know WHAT it is, but I'm leaning away from the chain. Maybe wishful thinking lol.

tbot wrote:Its not the timing chain Chris, its the VVT actuator slapping against itself due to a pin being bent/broken. The VVT itself works off oil pressure iirc, so with that actuator pin being broken there isn't the pressure build up required to keep it from slapping around.
So shouldn't it be consistent on startup after a few hours shut down? I still wouldn't think the sun would have much effect on it...
Is this the same issue as the video below?

This might be WAAAAAY out there but if it's the prob the TSB says it's the VVT lock pin like Tbot said. And it says they use heat treatment to stop it from happening. Maybe sitting in the sun is like a mini dose of heat treatment for it. Again, kinda out there but not improbable. Only way I can explain the inconsistency.

Well, that's not what mine sounds like. And mine is easier to hear from inside the cabin than outside.
Doesn't mean it isn't the problem, but I'm not worried about it right now. If it gets worse and starts to sound like that video, then I'll worry.

What I'm talking about is in this video. It's at the VERY end, after shut down. You'll see the power steering fluid reservoir shake...it's the sound that happens at the same time as that movement.
That said, listening to that video and one other I took from farther back, I may ALSO have the VVT actuator sound. LOL. Double fail.
Oh well. I'll just plan to have it done before the warranty expires in April. $250 isn't going to kill us. We just caught a HUGE break on our roof, so things are looking up.

uh....hmmm
hard to say...sounds kinda like valves...
and was there smoke coming out of the back of the engine bay towards the left of the video?!
at the same time tho, the shutdown sound ur talking about happens in my car as well, and i dont think i've ever given it any thought at all. its probably just something outside (power steering resevoire) shaking and hitting something.
