Laptop or NetBook ??

Postby roninspeed3 » Thu Jan 07, 2010 9:14

Considering a laptop or Netbook just so I can take advantage of WiFi while traveling.

I see stuff like this on CL-

http://denver.craigslist.org/sys/1501669508.html

But have no idea if that is a deal or a rip. I know these NetBooks can be had fairly cheap (new) and all I need is the ability to check accounts, email and send attachments. I thought I would throw it out there.....

Anyone? Ideas, something you want to sell?

Thanks

i think it depends on what you need it for. if it's just surfing and such a netbook should be fine.
We were looking at one for my daughter, but figured she'd need a dvd/cd drive/burner.
The added cost of buying an external one offset the cost of a netbook so we just got her a standard laptop with an internal drive instead.

That CL ad doesn't seem like a bad deal, honestly. I mean, most netbooks are ~$300, so to get a full laptop for a little more seems like a good marginal return.

Sounds like a Netbook would work for you needs....the only thing I would suggest is...make sure you pick one up with a larger hard drive...most of the Netbooks come with the SSD drives which are usually about 4-8GB in capacity...if you plan on saving a lot.. you'll want more HD space...

yeah, 400.00 to a trusted source is cool, but to someone who is not a member, never met etc, I'm worried the thing could become a really pricey doorstop in a month or two.

I would guess 8G is fine with a USB for a thumb drive as long as all I have is .docs and like files such as Excel. No pivot tables, major graphics etc.....

I'd recommend spending just a little more for a do-all laptop...

My friend has been looking for one for school so I checked around and recommended this one to her:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+-+Laptop+with+AMD+Athlon%26%23153%3B+II+Dual-Core+Processor+-+Coffee+Brown/9605383.p?id=1218130488875&skuId=9605383&st=9605383&cp=1&lp=1

$439 for a nice new Gateway that can do it all... this one is at Best Buy and sale ends on sunday...

I bought a new Gateway laptop about 4 years ago and have loved it, been able to do everything on it, and am still using it...

-----

Or get something like an iphone, (it's putting my laptop out of work, and I can sleep in even later while checking work mail from bed haha...)

I have a brand new Dell with a 16GB SSHD that I would be willing to sell. It is brand new and nothing has been installed on it. I bought it for the kids but it is challenging for them to use it effectively so we are going to buy a desktop for them. It has a 10.1" screen. I have all the software and it's running XP. Good little unit but I carry my Mac for travelling. I'll take $275 for it. Let me know. Lots of people in the springs know me and a couple Denver people.

Reall. Just get a laptob in the sallest screen size they offer. Netbooks don't tend to have the best keyboards or touchpads. They are nice for traveling and all but no CD/DVD drive is a bummer.

If you do get one wouldn't it be nice to be able to play movies or even have your music with you. If you get a Netbook go for one with atleast a 160 GB HD or you'll proably end up regretting it.

One more thing. Lets say you go with 4-8GB Netbook. How much space will you have after installing little things you'll need like Antivirus, Word, Excel, Adobe Reader, itunes/zune.......

I lean towards a more multi-purpose laptop. Get a 15" screen which doesn't leave that big of a footprint. If you must, I think there are 13" laptops out there. But in all honesty, even my 17" laptop is quite portable.

The keyboard on my Dell is a full size keyboard and the touch pad works just nicely. The only thing that bothers me a bit is how close the button is to the edge, but what do you expect with such a small unit.

FYI.... You can run portable apps from a memory stick that can read and save documents in a .doc format so there is no hard drive space taken up. Quite convienent if you ask me since 8GB thumb drives are fairly cheap these days.

The ONLY benefit to a netbook is the size. They were cool when they first came out and you could get one for under $200. But if size isn't your main concern, you're WAY better off getting a budget lappy. My girlfriend was wanting a netbook for her daughter for a birthday gift. We checked them out and the prices were right around $330-$400. We found a nice lappy for $299 at Best Buy. 160 gig, 3 gigs, DL-DVDRW, Win7, 15.6", Wi-Fi. The ONLY downside was that it's only a single core processor. But you know what? She doesn't play games, she doesn't use Photoshop or anything like that. I messed around on the computer for a while. It runs Zune software fine. Internet is blazing. Definitely a good buy.
