And I disagree with the comment about the state saving money going to 1 plate. The state doesn't pay for the plates, we do.
Bah Humbug.

Well then the state should see it as going green cause less resources will be used producing plates. At the same time people will save a little money that they can spend elsewhere. Heck I bet going to 1 plate and cutting the cost of plates by 1/3 would make people happy. Especially those that have new cars.
Would you rather pay $500 for 2 plates or $333 for 1 plate? Most people would even appreciate paying 1/4 less even for one plate. Would that small of a margin help the economy much? IDK. But it would mean less funding for stupid tiny round abouts. (But that would probably mean the people working on those stupid round abouts wouldn't have a job anymore.
) Oh well. I've had no problems at all with my plate on the dash. Not like a cop is going to run your plates when he's infront of you. #1 it's dangerouse cause he'd be looking in the rearview mirror. #2 It's even more dangerouse cause he'll be trying to make out your plate number, which will be bass ackwards in the mirror.

The country's going to hell in a handbasket. Indiana also requires insurance before you purchase plates but here's the kicker. they have barcodes on their plates and readers in all the cop cars...they can scan your plates to see if you have insurance. Some of the stop lights are coming out with long distance scanners as well and if your insurance has lapsed by a day then you will get fined. I miss Illinois. That was the only state I've been to where getting pulled over without insurance didn't mean instant ticket. And as far as plates go it's still cheaper to plate a car in Colorado than every other state I've lived in. I plated my dad's truck here just after the plate hike and it only cost me $70, when he had his plated in IL the year before plates alone cost him =$115 plus sales tax and title transfer fees. The $70 covered everything.
I don't really have a problem with the insurance requirement. In fact, I don't know why my insurance card and registration have to be with me at all times. I'd rather have them know I am covered, and registered. They can actually fine me if I haven't signed the registration, and don't have my insurance card! Why that isn't on file somewhere, boggles my mind!

The cost of registering your car is not covering the cost to manufacture the plates, so not requiring a front plate would only save a couple dollars, since the real reason for the registration costs is to cover road repairs/upgrades and things like that. It has nothing to do with how much it costs to stamp a number into a piece of tin.

Why, why, why, why, why would you be trying to drive without insurance anyway? What happens if you hit someone? Then they're just screwed? If anything is causing the country to go to hell in a handbasket (which it's not), it would be people refusing to take responsibility for their actions.

I've yet to be stopped in Colorado or Wyoming and I'm running a Euro plate up front. Truth be told my car is reg. in Arizona but police font know that unless they pull me over and take a close look at my rear plate. So I don't think they are too strict.

I ran without a front plate for a couple of years. I work and, at the time, lived downtown where I had to street park. I'm not as agreeable to a cosmetic tax (gee my car looks great without a plate, so I'll just accept parking tickets!), and after numerous run ins with parking enforcement, I gave up. I had never been pulled over by police for not having a front plate, however.
Also, stashing in the plate in the windshield is useless. If the parking people are going to write a no front plate ticket, they don't care if it's in the window. The law is that it must be affixed to the front bumper of the vehicle. If they don't see it there, you're going to get the ticket regardless. I even asked the magistrate that when I went to argue one of the tickets (which they did dismiss...I simply stated that "I have never not had a front license plate"...I left out that I had never mounted it.) they did mention that a plate in the windshield is not a legal replacement for attaching the plate.
Simply put, it's the law. Put it on, or don't put it on. It's a $25 fine. If not mounting it is worth $25 every time a parking attendant sees your car, or a cop feels like tacking on the secondary offense, go for it. Despite numerous attempts, the state hasn't killed this law as "safety" is mentioned as the reason for having front plates. I'd say the real reason is revenue, but whatever.

Yikes, I just saw the insurance comment. I WISH it was VERY strictly enforced in Colorado. When I moved here 10 years ago, I asked why insurance rates in CO were so high, and was given the reason that CO has the 2nd highest total of uninsured drivers in the country. NY was on the ball for insurance. They didn't fine you, there was a state mandatory "coverage" kicker that went into effect if your insurance lapsed. Something like $30/per day. They may not do it anymore, but you'd usually get a notice once per year that required you send in valid proof of insurance, in addition to proving you had insurance when registering your vehicle. Also, NY assumes if you have plates, you need insurance. So if you sell your car, you must go to the DMV and turn in your plates. I only found that out after selling my old car, hanging the plates in my garage, and then getting slapped with a $4000 collection notice from the state for unpaid insurance. (A VIN check quickly resolved that).
The more strictly enforced insurance coverage is, it makes it better for all law abiding citizens.

I wasn't stating that I thought insurance should not be mandatory I was comenting on the methods some states take to make money. My dad had his truck legal but went out of state for a while, when he came back to IN he was 2 days late renewing his insurance. Because the cop could scan his plates and tell that he got a fine for driving without insurance on the Saturday he returned and his truck was impounded until he got coverage...on Monday. So not only did he have to pay the fine and impound fees he also had to carry an SR-22 for 1 year. This was all because he had a flat tire in the middle of nowhere and it took time to get one that would fit his truck. It's things like that I'm complaining about. Before that my dad had carried full coverage on 3 vehicles for almost 7 years non-stop but because they could scan his plates and found that his insurance had been out for 2 days he was fined to hell.
When you don´t have a front license plate in austria, you can pay 150,- and when you get catched two times, you are fucked... Then you must give him your plates and the car is not allowed to get on street...
Grow up?! I make a lot of shit, but not everything!!!!

Ouch. But Euro plates fit better on cars and take up less space. But still 150, and the second time they take the plates. That's Brutal.
