The car is in working order again. I've put about 800 miles on it since the new motor. That said I'm weighing selling it or trading it for something else. The car has earned a bad reputation with my wife (when it blew up we were up in the mountains)... So the car may go. If any of you have interest let me know.

Damn another Mazda owner with buyer remorse.
Blown motors, bad side air bags, not enough zoom zoom, etc.
I hope Corporate Mazda is listening.
