I was referring to whp. When I combined my exhaust manifold with the AP I gained close to 100 whp above 5000 rpm on my car. Needless to say, I love taking her to redline now, before those two mods I never did.

He's not referring to peak power, more or less referring to power under the curve. I'm sure peak power didn't go up nearly that drastically, but that doesn't make the car doesn't now have a much wider powerband :D

To the OP: IMO to really discern what mod path you should take, like others have mentioned above, you should really give some insight as to what you would like to improve with the car? What are your goals? Where do you feel the car is lacking? That will help a lot.

DP, intake, exhaust...easiest path to power without killing your DD ability. unlike with us NA guys who put $100"s into our cars and get maybe 15-30whp gain depending on altitude AND we need to make sure we keep a bit of back-preasure. with your turbo, those mods that allow your car to breathe better will give you alot more power....more airflow is great for a turbo...allows to spool quicker/faster/and produce peak boost.

but to be honest...a straight line speed is really the "entry" level of (for lack of a better word...) tuning.

your car can already out perform most everything in the 20-30k dollar range, has a respectable 1/4mile time, and 0-60time.

work on your suspension....speed means nothing if you cant take a corner. upgrade to coilovers instead of spending $1000 on an intake and exhaust...upgrade your front/rear sway bars, bushings ect...

but whatever path you take...have fun with it, and install as many things as you can yourself...that way you learn the insides of your car.

If all you're looking for is a moderate increase in power, I would recommend a tried and true path: intake, turboback exhaust & an Accessport. They have plenty of base maps that you can run that should pick up a decent amount of power. Ultimately, a custom tune will typically yield larger gains than a base map, but unless you're a real power junkie, and OTS map should sate your craving for a few extra ponies. Keep in mind, modding isn't cheap, and you get what you pay for.

-Cobb Accessport will run you about $695.

-Your stock cat-back isn't too restrictive, and typically the calibrations used for a "stage 2" map, well they really only require a downpipe, as they're just looking to get rid of the OEM cats/largest restrictions in your exhaust. So, you could save yourself some cash and just pick up a downpipe. For a DP, you're looking at anywhere from $250 (for a cheap shorty) to $700 (for a full length DP with high flow cat like Cobb's).

-Mazdaspeeds have pretty restrictive intakes... which, is kind of odd in this day and age. Most modern turbo cars (EVO/WRX/STI ect) intakes don't yield too large of a gain, but Speed3's actually see good gains. Might as well. If you're cheap, you can just remove the little flapper/plastic plate at the bottom of the airbox (at least I know the Speed6 has one), remove the resonator & toss in a high flow panel filter like a K&N. You might pick up a few ponies from that while still appearing stock, however it won't be quite as free flowing as conical filter full replacement. For an intake, you're looking at anywhere from $150-$300 typically.

^^^Those are really the best bang for your buck mods. You can make more power on the stock turbo by eliminating breathing restrictions, but those are going to give you the most power for your money.

I agree that making a car overly powerful without touching suspension can make a car unbalanced, definitely something to keep in mind. IMO balance is a good thing, and can make a car much more fun to drive.

However, with that said, I believe the MS3 is pretty balanced from the factory, the motor feels on par with the suspension & brakes... at sea level. At sea level people don't have much of a problem trapping at over 100mph in stock form, whereas up here a stock MS3 is lucky to trap 93-94mph. Power lost at altitude is significant, and as such, adding a few parts just to get it back on par with sea level power levels wouldn't upset the car's balance IMO. Just my $.02

Either way, have fun and enjoy the car!

I agree with the no need for a catback on this car. I wanted one for a long time thinking it would add power but really it only changes the sound as the stock catback is free flowing.

You'll notice moderate gains with an intake and BOV (in addition to the change is sound which is highly pleasing to most) Now the real difference is noticeable once you add a DP and engine management (AP or Standback) I was shocked when I got my cp-e DP + Standback on and just up'd the boost (no tune) for starters. That was the first time this car REALLY glued my head to the back of the seat.

This is the feeling I want:)

Would the DP with high flow cat have any effect on emmissions and/or smoking turbo?

anything exhaust related (meaning from the turbo back) will effect emissions in some shape or form. if you mean, will it make you fail?... no, unless CO emission standards become so ridiculous you have to actually have to have 2 cats to pass..which isn't too far fetched.

Hi Flow cat should be fine for passing emissions. I'll have to return mine to stock next spring when my emissions is due as a have a catless cp-e DP.

Good to know, thanks guys. I'm not one to switch stuff out, so anything I do will be somewhat permenant. I'm hesitant to do anything exhaust related, but have always wanted a catted DP.

Thanks everyone. You guys have been a ton of help. I think im just gonna do a little with the suspension and then maybe get a downpipe and an AP. Thank you again for all the information.
