Smoking Turbo? Help!

LOL. We brought our CX-9 in for an SSB this morning and I talked with Joey, the service manager at our dealer. I like Joey -- he's always been upfront with me. Good guy.

Anyway, I was talking to him about bringing in the MS6 and told him I'd need a loaner because they'd probably need my car awhile. His response: "We'll get you a car. We're used to this."

Ok turbo guys, you should all know to let your turbo cars cool down before turning them off. For two reasons; to get fresh oil into the turbo and to let the exhaust temps cool so you don't get warped exhaust valves. The life of your turbo depends on fresh oil getting into the bearing and taking away some of the heat so the seals don't crack. Speedydad hit on the head. That's why they invented the turbo timer.

Allowing the turbo to settle is recommended for sure, but these cars have an internal turbo timer of sorts so there is no need to waste the money on a turbo timer. Couple that with the fact that most people do not drive hard in their own neighborhoods and the turbo should have plenty of time to sit.

When I drove a turbo, I never drove hard in my own neighborhood, or anyone elses' for that matter. But the true way to tell if it's cooled off enough is a pyrometer or an egt. Temps at the exhaust should be well below 350 before you turn it off. When I got into my driveway, agian not driving hard, my temps were always above 475. It only takes 30 seconds to a minute to cool down. Not a long time in the grand scheme of things to prolong the life of your turbo.

Very good advice nonetheless. My wife always looks at me like I'm crazy when we get to our destination and I just sit there, letting the car idle for a minute or two. By now, she just gives me the "do-you-know-how-lame-you-are" look and smiles.

^My friends don't like when i drive because they have to wait for the car to cool. They love my car but hate the human turbo timer.

So just to clarify- Have you always shut your car off right away?

I always have, yes. But strangely, this time it idled for 10 minutes or so, then got shut down. Then started, drove for maybe a minute, the idled and started to smoke.

Stealth, Make sure that the dealer replaces the the entire turbo. My turbo smoked and had to fight tooth and nail to get the dealer to replace the entire assembly, that is the only solution. There is no other fix and you might have to show them the smoke. The best way to get it to smoke is to get the car warmed up and the engage is some spirited driving to get the turbo hot and then just let the car idle. At idle there is not enough back pressure to hold the seals in place and allows a small amount of oil into the turbo causing it to smoke. Once the dealer sees it billow out clouds of white smoke, they have no choice but to replace the turbo. I think the new turbos have some sort of fix, mine has not smoked since.
