Smoking Turbo? Help!

Postby Stealth01 » Fri Apr 24, 2009 9:14

Hey, CMZCers. This morning, the MS6 start spewing white smoke from the tailpipes. Only lasted for about 2-3 minutes, but I am worried that it could be the turbo seal issue. Is that the right colored smoke for the turbo problem? If so, what other issues am I going to encounter? I'll have it in this weekend, but I want to go in there armed with the right knowledge of this issue. Is there a service bulletin number for that?

Was this obvious deep white smoke or just condensation looking? Its not uncommon for the DISI to have bad condensation on start up. I know mine does. Evert now and then at start up when i let it warm up it begins to do what it sounds your's is doing, but mine is for sure not oil, just condensation.

No, it was smoke. Even smelled a bit. So looks like I'm getting a new turbo. O joy. :(

Might not be a bad thing. You are stock last i remember, so you should not have a problem with the dealer. A new turbo for an '06 now would be a good thing of sorts. This may sound strange, but lets just hope it will smoke when at the dealer.

I spoke with Bob Penkhus just now, and they said they'll actually take the piping off an inspect the seal, even if it doesn't smoke. So that's a good thing. I take it in Tuesday and will minimize driving it until then. I'll also check my service receipts and make sure they used 30-weight oil when they did the changes.

Thats awesome that Penkhus does not require to see the turbo smoking in order to replace it.

I've had good luck with their service guys lately. I'm hoping they'll take care of it for me without trouble. Should probably have them check the rear diff bolts while they're under there, huh?

Nice.......GL, sounds like you will be fine since your stock.....

Mine started smoking at bandi while in line waiting to get in on Wed. I sat there at idle for quite a bit and it was white.......This is the first time I have seen smoke since finding oil in my TMIC scare......glad the PG rebuild will be going in soon with a OCC.

This is just about what it looked like, though there was only about half that much smoke:

Pretty big puff! I used to get the occasional small puff after short drives. I think you may also encounter this if you've been flying down the highway, pull off and stop without proper "cool down".

That's where a turbo timer would be needed, right?

Fook, I hate these types of threads. I think this is the first time I've heard about a stock vehicle's turbo smoking... Good luck, hope everything works out in the end-
