The exciting conclusion: Apparently once the higher-ups at Firestone got wind of this, they told the manager to pay the hell up already. Mazda charged $169 for the repair and Firestone cut me a check for it.

I gotta tell you, though, as bad a rep as dealerships get, I have to tip my hat to the service department at Bob Penkhus Mazda, particularly the manager, Diane Defeo. They really had my back on this one.

Finding a quality mechanic at Firestone, grease monkey, or brakre r us, is like trying to find a 5 star chef at McDonalds, Burger King, or Toco Bell.

A bummer story for sure, but not uncommon.
