Tanabe Coilovers

Postby Buffalo » Thu Feb 05, 2009 9:14

So its time to start looking to project RX8...

The first thing i need for the summer is tires, Dave I will be calling you up in a couple of months, but first i want to get the car where i want it. I was considering lowering the car with springs and new performance struts but for the same price i could pick up a set of Tanabe Coilovers. My question is, anyone use these or know of anyone who has. Good or bad i would like to hear about it.

Thanks.

Personally I would go with a good set of springs and struts. I don't know anything about that company though. If you are not going to be at the track all the time and needing the adjustability then you are better off with lowering springs.

I was thinking of the Tanabe springs with some good bilstein shocks or tokico.

I agree i won't need to adjust them really but for the money, would it be better to get the coilovers?

Supposedly they're fantastic, I haven't heard anything bad about them. All I can say is if you do go with Tanabe, MAKE SURE whoever you order from is a reputable vendor and has them in stock. Tanabe isn't the biggest company out there and just like everyone else they are struggling right now, so if you don't go to somewhere that already has parts in stock, guaranteed to ship, you might run into some problems. The vendor I bought mine from screwed me over; I'm still out around $3300. The parts I ordered were rare in the first place, and they are now discontinued. He won't refund me so I'm kind of up to my ears.

To answer your question about coilovers versus a strut and spring combo...I disagree with Chris, I think it's totally worth the extra money for coilovers. It's nice to be able to slam your car if you want and then easily raise it for the winter. And having adjustable dampers is definitely a useful feature, when I had coilovers on my 240SX I was changing the damping a lot. Set them soft for street use, and stiffen 'em up when you go on mountain drives or go to the track. It's more useful than you might think.

I was going to order them from my buddies shop Revolutions Performance in the springs. He called Tanabe up and checke the price and stock. I guess they are out of stock and the price is a bit higher because they have to ship them from Japan. 60 days is the usual shipping plus a week to get them to me... I trust the shop i would be ordering them from.
