^^^This is the first time I've ever seen the MS3 not win a comparison... but IMO, competition is a good thing, as it only makes the breed better
What was interesting is that in their autoX event, both the WRX & the Cobalt SS beat the MS3 by about a second... and more interesting is that the Cobalt SS did so without the optional LSD, that's extremely impressive IMO. I said it when I first saw the specs on the new Cobalt SS, and it has been confirmed, Chevy now has the best bang for buck car in the under $30k market.
I thought that autoX time might have been a fluke, until I saw the Cobalt SS' lap time on C&D's Lightning Lap, where it beat cars like the EVO, STI, Audi S5, BMW 135i, Lexus IS F, Honda S2000 CR, ect ect. I'm assuming that lap time was with the optional $500 LSD:

^^^Needless to say, the new Cobalt SS is the real deal. If I were in the market for a new car, or was in a position to trade the STI in (assuming I didn't love it), no doubt I would be buying American
For anyone only interested in the performance stats from the comparo, here they are:
Cobalt SS:
5.4 second 0-60
13.9@104mph (<<holy shit look at the trap speed)
0.92g (with an open diff....)
70.0mph slalom
121 ft 60-0 braking
45.62 seconds autoX
2009 WRX:
5.1 second 0-60 (<<only 0.1 slower than R&T tested the 2008 STI!)
13.8@101.0mph
0.87g
67.0mph slalom
124 ft 60-braking
45.46 seconds autoX
Mazdaspeed 3:
5.7 second 0-60
14.1@101.3mph
0.86g
68.7mph slalom
120 ft 60-0 braking
46.61 seconds autoX
Lancer Ralliart:
5.4 second 0-60
14.1@97.2mph
0.84g
66.7mph slalom
129 ft 60-0 braking
47.16 seconds autoX
Needless to say, after almost 2 years of dominating the market, the MS3 finally has some new competition

1988 Rx7 Convertible: Current DD
1987 Rx7 Turbo II: motor down as of 10/28/08

I'd much rather have a Saturn Sky, although it's hard to compare the two. Perhaps if I drove one it would change my mind.
