Ah, forgot to mention one thing...I was also accused of racing the car, because "that's what the RX-8 is for".

Umm isn't that what it's for? I mean it is a sports car. It was tested around race tracks. They're commercials state that Mazdas are the most road raced cars in the US than any othre manufacturer brand. Mazda uses it themselves in races. Umm so what part of it doesn't make it a race car?...

What a load of Bull. How in the world can they tell if you race a car or not. Did you leave your raing numbers on? ;)

call their corporate office, and keep calling until they let yo speak to someone who listens to you. threaten a lawsuit because they didn't fix the problem while it was under warranty

The latest, spoke to Rich again today. He said they can't diagnose the transmission problem with a bad clutch, so I have to replace the clutch ($1200) and I can not replace with an aftermarket clutch, because then they will not be able to diagnose the issue correctly. Asked if they would reimburse or pay for the labor if/when the clutch was deemed to be NOT the issue, and he said no.

So basically, I'll pay for a clutch that's only been on the car 8000 miles, can't potentially upgrade that clutch, and be stuck with a $1200 tab when it doesn't fix the 2nd gear issue, which then MIGHT be covered under warranty. I'm smelling a potentially trade-in, which sucks, as I really like this car.

That is messed up! I am sorry to say it but if i were stuck in your shoes i would consider getting trading it in as well.

I would ask Burt to look at the transmission. If your going to pay $1200.00 you should ask Burt to go in and take a look around. If there is something that is wrong than they can cover it under warranty along witht the labor of taking it off in the first place.

See what they say about that.

As cjtherrialt said, I'd write a letter. I'd also start calling up the chain of people too.

It may seem like it won't produce results, but I was able to get a Chevy dealership (Ed Bozarth) to replace a CV joint on my service van after I was 4000 miles out of warranty, by doing just that (actually they paid for the $1100 part, and I had to pay for the labor... 1.25 hours worth... it was less than $100). We recently got Nissan to pay for a fuel sending unit on the wifes Xterra when it went bad with 100,000+ miles on it. They claimed they fixed it on a recall years ago. We politely, but persistently kept telling different people that it wasn't fixed properly if it was repaired before, and we would like them to fix it properly. They finally relented after about 10 days of going back and forth over it...It was around $850 parts and labor. We got'm to pay for the tow too!

Seeing as you have been dealing with this problem since before the warranty had expired, I think you stand a chance of getting them to help you out. If they don't, give'm an ear full (but be polite)! Don't give up! They want to wear you down so you'll do something like you are contemplating... It only makes them more money. Work every angle you can. From saying they never fixed it properly to you'll never buy another Mazda again and you'll tell everyone you know about your negative experience with the manufacture.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I'd love to go to Burt, but they don't have any tranny techs right now. I keep going back and forth between trading and, and sucking it up, paying the $1200, and realizing that the rest of the car will get fixed once that doesn't resolve it. I'm going to call Mazda again tomorrow and ask them about the cost of labor if the clutch replacement doesn't resolve the problem. Depending on how I feel tomorrow, I may yank the clutch pedal bracket off and inspect.

Don't know when or where, but the RX-8 will be gone. Jimmy at Burt initially agreed with me that it's the syncros, called Gateway (who never even drove the car, but proclaimed it as "hot spots on the clutch that only affects your 2nd gear"), and now is prone to believe Gateway. I officially give up. The car will be gone, and I will never purchase another Mazda vehicle, only because of the completely insane customer service I've received over the 10 months of dealing with this issue. I just don't get it. I've had an independent shop drive it and say it's the syncros. My gearhead buddy has driven it saying it's the syncros. The tech at Lakewood Mazda said it was the syncros. Yet the service managers everywhere say it's the clutch. I'm actually just sitting here shaking my head at this point.

Now I just have to figure out that whats, whens, and dollars.

What a bunch of morons. If a clutch affects 2nd, it affects 3rd, 4th... Usually 1st or 3rd are the worst if the clutch is bad. 2nd only, would be synchros. I think you need a 2nd gear, synchros and whatever else (springs?) goes along with it. I bet if we pulled that puppy out, we'd see.

Have you drained the tranny? You may see the pieces of 2nd if you do.

This is why I never take my car in for service.

Best of luck to you Tim with whatever you get. Both of my Mazdas have been relatively trouble free for me.

you've still got another course of action. The one thing that scares the shit out of any business. The Better Business Bureau. Theyre always a help. Even if you threaten the service team with a call it changes attitudes. CJ i might have been infront of your barracks. Your barracks near Bldg 2259?
