For anyone who hasn't seen this issue yet it's the cover story. Here is the intro:

"The five cars on these pages are kindred spirits in overachievement. Although they may be humble in some respects, they all five turn, stop, and go--particularly, go--with the brio of competitors costing thousands or, in some cases, tens of thousands more. In honor of their heroic, giant-killing performance, we salute these scrappy street fighters that punch out mega performance for something less than mega dollars. We do it as the dark clouds of sharply higher gasoline costs gather over the land, casting into doubt the duration of this golden age of horsepower. These cars are helping to democratize performance, putting major muscle into the hands of the many. Grab yours now, before the days of attainable speed once again slip into our collective rearview mirror."

In order of appearance:
Nissan GT-R
Mazdaspeed 3 FTW!!!
Chevrolet Corvett Z06
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo
Pontiac G8

Cost Comparison:
Porsche 911 Turbo vs. Nissan GT-R (-$56,060)
Volkswagen R32 vs. Mazdaspeed 3 (-$10,540)
Ferrari F430 vs. Corvette Z06 (-$119,650)
Audi S$ vs. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo (-$15,470)
BMW 550i vs. Pontiac G8 (-$29,280)

I love how they throw all these small size motor cars in their and compare em to the more expensive larger motor gas suckers. Then they throw in a Corvette. A large motor gas sucker and to justify it they compare it to an exotic thats rarely seen. Seems out of place to me.

I don't agree with the F430 vs the Vette comparo, either. If you're going to compare cars, they should at least be somewhat close in class. And while the R32 vs MS3 is fair, the R32 is just ridiculously overpriced.

it's only a 30k difference a between the 5series and a G8?
that's either a cheap bmw or a pricey pontiac.

The base G8 is just shy of $30k, so the BMW is basically 2 G8s.
