Whats the deal?

I went down to Mazda in Motor City today with a potential Mazda owner today. In the 5 Mins after i hit Motor City i saw 3 RX8's for sale. Theres a red one at the Acura dealership by Nevada, a red one across the street and one at Bob Penkhus Mazda. I didnt stop at the first to but the one at Mazda is gorgeous. Its an 05 Black Cherry 6spd Shinka. Whats goin on here? I thought summer was the time for sports cars to be poppin up everywhere. I didnt think they were gonna be on car lots for sale.

I guess with gas at almost four dollars a gallon people aren't all about the rotary cars.

But if you do the math, it takes a looooong time for the newer fuel efficient car to pay for itself in gas savings.

My friend drives a 5.6L V8 Mercedes land yacht (560SL) that gets about 18 mpgs with his driving routes and style. The car is paid for. We compared it to a new Smart Car (also owned by Mercedes- he's a Mercedes freak) that is rated for 40 mpgs. We figured that with gas at its current price, he could drive the Mercedes for 8.3 years and spend the same on gas for the Mercedes as he would for the purchase price of the Smart. Add in the operating cost for the Smart and it would take probably 11 years to justify the purchase of the Smart.

You've also got cars coming off of leases, dropping out of warranty. Not uncommon to see 3-4 yr old cars for sale.

When I somehow manage to keep my foot out of the secondaries, ok just shift at 5k instead of 9k, my RX gets about 17 mpg, and that's a very heavily ported 13b with dual weber carbs, that flood whenever they want. I think I finally nailed the flooding issue so it might get better. My Passport gets between 18 and 20mpg. And yes, these are city mileage numbers. So I agree, it wuld cost a lot more in the long run to get a new "fuel efficeint" car. Even the cars tht get 35mpg on the highway only get 22-24 in the city, so i wouldn'e be able to see enough savings to justify the expense.

This is a weird fact that me and Pooh Bear have noticed over the past couple years of him selling Mazdas... They sell more of the RX8s and Miatas during the winter months, even when the gas prices weren't that bad.
