Yeah, whats the word on the motor?
I would wash my own car if the weather didn’t suck and my driveway at home wasn’t always covered in snow and ice...

Do you have a 2.0L or a 2.3L? Not that it matters much.... if you just started hearing knock, there's a good chance the head is still salvagable, so you might be able to save a few bucks by just dropping in a new short block if you can find one. When Mazda gave you a $5k quote, was it for a new shortblock or new longblock? If the quote was for a longblock, ask how much for a short block. I found quite a few longblocks/front clips on Ebay, but no shortblocks. Try Craigslist, local salvage yards, and online Mazda 3 forums. In the WRX/STI world, people seem to put up long/shortblocks for sale almost daily over on Nasioc, so you might check with large Mazda 3/6 sites. I only mention Mazda 6 sites due to the fact they use the same 2.3L I4 in the 6I as the 3S has, so you *should* be able to swap in a motor from a 6I.... again, I say *should*, don't quote me on that. I'm assuming they have the same block sensor ports ect.
As far as other motors to swap in go... obviously you're on a budget, so you're fairly limited, but if you have a 2.0L 3I, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to swap in a 2.3L 3S motor, as I'm thinking it's the same block casting, just different bore & stroke. Don't quote me on that, but if that is in fact the case, you could take this opportunity to upgrade your bottom end, assuming you have a 2.0L. I'm thinking it would be extremely costly and difficult to drop in a Mazdaspeed 3 motor, mostly due to the fact it's direct injection, and getting everything running properly could be very difficult and costly.
Or another option... if you were ever thinking about turbo-ing the car in the future... you could take the opportunity to build up the bottom end for boost, forged rods, pistons, sleeves, run lower compression ect. It probably wouldn't cost too much more than rebuilding the bottom end with OEM pieces anyway. Either way, you've got options. Let us know how things go.

hey guys so i got an update for ya. i just talked with my mech and my dad and after going over all the options we decided that were just going to have him rebuild the engine. its gonna take a while but its not going to be as expensive as i though in the first place. so thats good. he said all together somewhere between 2000 and 2500. so not too bad but still sucks.
