We will be heading west CO-6 (Clear Creek Canyon Road), then take CO-119 North to Central City where we will make a quick pit stop. From there, we will take south Central City pkwy to West I-70 to Idaho Springs. From Idaho Springs, jump on CO-103 then CO-5 to Mt. Evans. You'll be driving on the North America highest paved road to Mt. Evans (14,130 ft). It's going to be quite chilly up there around this time of the year, bring your anorak. We will be back tracking to Idaho Springs for lunch.
Please add other suggestions if you have any for pit stops (eateries, scenic areas etc).
Get some walkie-talkie!
Bring warm cloths and your camera!
Update!!!
In the event that CO-5 would be closed due to averse snow condition. We will be taking 103 from Idaho Springs to our final stop in Evergreen (choose an eatery of your choice there).

I was just up the Mt Evans road yesterday. It was closed from the Summit Lake on up (5 miles left until the actual summit). I'm no expert, but I would think that in late October, there would be even MORE snow on the road and the chances of the road being closed would be even higher. In fact, check out the Wikipedia listing for Hwy 5.
And if it weren't for it being National Wildlife Day yesterday, it would have cost $10 to drive up the road.
Plus, about 1/4 mile before the Summit Lake, the road surface was severly damaged- lots of upheaval and sinking. Driving through this section in a car is probably possible, but I was glad I was driving my SUV at the time.
With that in mind, I would suggest changing the route to start in Evergreen and drive up Hwy 103 to where Hwy 5 goes up Mt Evans and then continue on over to Idaho Springs.

End of October if awfully close to the start of the skiing season, you might have a point there regarding the closure of CO-5.
If CO-5 is closed at that time, we can revise our route and take a detour through Evergreen, then back to Morrison through CO-74.
I don't think starting from Evergreen would be a good spot tho, it's fairly away from town and you will miss all the fun from riding together through CO-74.

I'm down no matter what we do. a couple thoughts: fantastic buffalo place in idaho springs! best buffalo burgers ever! definitely gotta keep an eye out for snow closures. when time is closer we can look up on highway patrol website. alternatives could also be gunella (sp?) pass, loveland pass, etc
It's not what you drive, it's how you drive it.
