Engine and tranny are ready to pull. I usually separate them but I've been having a hard time getting the clutch to un-attach from the flywheel. Then I remembered its been grinding going into fifth, and my old original tranny did that too, so I'm going to pull the tranny with the engine this time and take both trannies to get rebuilt.

Zico, Jesse, Andy, and Maxwell came over Sunday and we pulled my engine and Zico's. We cranked the engine over and you could already see that the housings have pretty heavy chatter marks, and right at the exhaust port there are a couple deep marks.

Breaking the flywheel nut, the front bolt and getting the flywheel/counterweight off was easier than it had been before. I was very thankful for that. However, taking out the studs was a different story. I twisted two allen wrenches trying to get out three of the studs, so I've decided I'm going to go back to the stock bolts. Also, I'm glad I put my ghetto fix on the one stud, because it was very loose and would have come out very easily and hit the flywheel and probably ruin the whole engine. And this whole time I thought it was just me being paranoid lol.

After taking off the rear iron, we checked it out and the grooves on it are kinda bad. So it looks like I'll be sending off all the pieces to get resurfaced and get a nitride coating. But for now I think I'll try to find a 5 speed rear iron in excellent condition to go with the new engine I got from Zack and just build that. I'm trying to decide if I want to get all new seals and have a brand new-ish engine, or just stick with the ALS seals and Atkins kit that was in this build. Spec'ing all the seals might point me in the right direction though, if they don't spec to standards.

So why are the housings scratch? Are the apex seals bent ot broken?

Sorry to hear about your motor & transmissions. Good luck with all the rebuilds.

You should spec the surface on the irons, mine looked like they would be out of spec but when we checked them they were just fine.

Not really scratched, there are chatter marks over most of the inside. But there are no cracks around the spark plug holes at least. The apex seals are worn weird because of the exhaust port being rectangular, and you can see lines all around the housings from that too. I'll post pics.

Thanks!

I'm going to. I think what I'm going to do is get a really good condition rear iron for a 5 speed and build the newer engine I have. Then I'll send pics to Goopy and/or Chips Motorsports and see if they can resurface the housings and irons, and then I'll build that as a backup engine.

Could part of your problem be the actual porting job? It seems like it doesn't matter how many times you rebuild the motor you have, it doesn't get any better.

This is the first time I've used this engine actually. When I got this engine I got it in pieces from different people. I got the housings from one person, and I think I got two or all of the irons from a guy I met in Springfield, MO, and if I remember right the rotors came out of my original engine. I do think the exhaust port is a problem though. Having it squared off the way it is causes some really weird wear on the apex seals, and I'm wondering if using water injection is causing the chatter marks by washing off the oil. Maybe I'm injecting too much. I haven't seen any other people have the issues I've had with water injection, with the chatter marks and, more specific to the water injection, the deposits left in the throttle body, intake elbow and UIM.

I didn't realize that. I could see too much water being a problem. The motor needs to have a little oil on the housings to prevent chatter.

Are you going to reuse those housings?

I'm going to see if I can get them resurfaced by Goopy or whoever, and use them in the next build. For now I'm looking at using the engine I got from Zack, and might be getting a rear iron from Mike B tomorrow. I'm going to meet him at Fan Fest, so I'll be down there.

I'm talking to Jesse right now and he mentioned that my apex seals being worn on the ends more than in the middle resulted in my low compression...I hadn't even thought about that. So basically these housings are garbage unless I use some RA Super Seals. Maybe they're hard enough to not wear down. He's also saying that he thinks the apex seals and springs were subpar and the seals were bouncing in the housings. Good possibility.

I think I'm going to have Cody paint the engine bay, but that brought up a couple other things too. Since I'll be removing ABS for that, I was thinking about just leaving it out and putting a delete kit in. I'm also thinking about trying to do a Rywire harness with a cannon plug at the firewall, but if I do that I need to do it before paint. And if I do the Rywire harness, I was thinking about doing the FFE crank trigger setup, and if I do that I need to do it before I get the Rywire harness. So there are a few things I'm thinking about right now.

Do you have the Burnout kit on your car? Sorry for the off topic, but don't really want to go through 73 pages looking.

I bought an ABS delete kit from Alex Rodriguez last night, and then Jesse stopped by this morning and reminded me that he made his own kit lol. So I'll be doing that, and possibly selling the one I bought last night.
