Just got here today. In a word...HAMAZING! I forgot how much I loved this road, how curvy it was, and how freaking long it takes to drive through just 11 miles lol. I tried to get the GoPro working on the TN side on my way to the hotel in Robbinsville, but I forgot the memory card was full. ARGH!!! It's probably better this way. If I'd gotten to record I would have just been recording my school girl giggles and some profanities, such as "F*&^ this is awesome!" Might have also heard my driver's front tire chewing fender several times too. At least it's chewing the underside and not the lip. It's 30mph through pretty much the whole thing, and I think the fastest I got was about 45 on some of the straighter parts. I was also taking it a little easy on the straight parts though, I didn't want to be speeding too much if a cop went by. Not to mention it's been 7 years since I've driven this, and back then it was only a couple times so I need to learn/relearn the road. I'd rather not take a spill off the side of the mountain. In the turns I was usually doing about 30, maybe as low as 20 on the really tight ones. I think I may have seen about 4 cars on there though, all going the other direction. Never got stuck behind another car. I only went through it the one time today, from TN to NC. Once I got to the hotel I met some other guys here for the road. One has a Mazdaspeed 3 and is here with his group, and the other two are friends from Florida that have been here since Monday with their street bikes. During the week is definitely the time to come if you just want an open road. I might just have to come back again another year, but I'm going to need some people to come along, and that's where you guys come in.

I'm gonna hit up Cherohala Skyway tomorrow too. I'm going to TRY to get up around 6 (less than 5 hours from now) and shower, eat and hit the road early so I can get as much driving in as possible, because I have to leave by early afternoon so I can make it to Goldsboro to my buddy's house tomorrow night before it's too late. Friday I'm going to Pope AFB in Fayetteville to see my old friends, and others around town, and Saturday I'm hanging with the old rotary crew in Raleigh. I think I might come back and do some more driving Sunday HAHA.

We'll see if it actually happens. My buddy told me he can get them for $2700 through his company. I really want some.

Good price. Found these today, not sure where apexi sits in the gransd scheme of things.

Please keep posting your reviews on the roads. Like i told you, I'll be there in July. The Cherahola Syway sounds amazing, but is a little out of my way. There are so many roads there.

Did you hit moonshiner 28 off the dragon last night, or did you run the Dragon start to finish? Also, thanks for posting your speeds. It is good to see because when I am there, it will help me know the limit a little bit better. I was told there are two corners to be aware of. One has a dumpster to alert you it is coming. Do you think the marked recomended speds are worth anything? I'm guessing they were meant more for bikes?

Shadow,

When I left, all the S2k guys (the normal ones, not the shop bubbas) were using the KWv3 and AST 4100/5100 series. Both offered awesome spring rates with street worthy driveability.

The Apexi are similar design and manufactured in the same place as Megan,BC/BR, etc.

Hope that helps

Cherohala isn't that far away actually, the road for it comes right out of Robbinsville. Unless you're planning on taking 28 and staying in Bryson City.

I did drive 28, it's pretty fun too.

To make it simple...the Dragon is all very tight turns. There are only about two places where it straightens out a bit, or where it has some slight curves you can take a little faster. Everything else is butt-puckering really tight turns...butt-puckering when taken at enough speed of course. Usually I was doing the speed limit (30) in the turns, MAYBE a mph or two faster sometimes.

Cherohala Skyway is more high speed sweepers, which I love, in this car anyway. If I had a Miata I'd probably love the Dragon more, and as small as the S2K is that will probably be your favorite as well. I pulled over to let a Miata pass me actually. Some might find that embarrassing because it's a Miata and the whole "oh you drive a Miata, you must be gay hyuk hyuk", but those of us who know how great they are on the track understand how great it is for this road. Plus the guy had Tennessee tags and the way he was zipping through there I imagine he drives it almost daily lol. Anyway, Cherohala is mostly sweepers like I said, but it does have a couple tighter turns thrown in. Not near as tight as curves on the dragon, but still not a sweeper either. Also, I will say the Skyway is LONG. It drops you off in Tellico Plains, TN. And, about three miles shy of that end in Tellico is a turnoff that leads you to waterfalls. I went as far back as the first waterfall but I was in a hurry to get to my buddy's house in Bristol, TN so I left after that. Next time I go, I want to go for a week.

28 is a mix between the Dragon and the Skyway. The turns aren't as tight as the Dragon and not sweepers like the Skyway.

I feel I should also mention that if you go to drive the roads, do it during the week. I know that's probably obvious, but you have no idea how much of a difference it is lol. When I drove the Dragon Thursday morning, there were a few more cars on the road than Wednesday night but not many more. There were a few bikes too. When I drove it during the event back in 2006, it was almost bumper to bumper, but most of the time still smooth flowing. But with that many cars on the road, it keeps you from pushing it if you want to. Not to mention some of those cars were and are going to be minivans, work trucks, etc. SOME of the people will be considerate and pull over for you to pass, but some don't and you have to pull over and wait to give some space between you and hope another car doesn't come along in that time.

I'm still trying to convert my videos and upload them to youtube. I'm also going to buy some pics from Killboy.com, US129photos.com, and Moonshinephotos.com. Here are links to some of the pics. These are on April 18th and they are on different pages depending on the site.

I have been waiting to make up my mind between running swift springs on stock shocks, swift springs on konis with ground control collars, or going with buddy club n+ coilovers. Megans came up as a decent alternative to the buddy clubs, and bilstein pss9s have been in the same ballpark. I'm no where near touching ohlins, penski, etc. I have to leave those for guys with deployment checks like speedjunkie:mellow: the kw v3 are generally in the same ball park as the high end stuff, but I see them come up used every once in a while at a decent price.

I'd take konis over megan or buddy clubs any day

Yeah I really like that one as well! I think I'm going to get as many as possible from the different sites. I'm not really wanting to pay several hundred dollars though so we'll see lol.

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you guys...last Wednesday when I got to Deal's Gap, I met the guy that organizes Mazda Dragon Camp for the Mazdaspeed guys. Turns out he's had some run-ins with Phil as well. Whatdya know?! He said Phil tried to get him to register his guys with DGRR since they were going to be there at the same time. LOL wow. Also he was upset in the first place because the other guy said MDC was going to coincide with DGRR. He didn't say it'd be part of it, just that it would happen at the same time. Someone needs to grow up.

And now I hear that some guys had an issue with Phil this year at the event. They showed up without paying and they said they didn't realize they had to pay and Phil tried to kick them out on the spot. And now of course his fanboys are all over them about it lol.

I love that he thinks he OWNS Deal Gap and the PUBLIC road. What a douche.

I get it if people are crashing the events, but come on. And now he's posting on FB about requiring wristbands and stickers on cars. If you don't have them they will have a group of "enforcers" to kick those people out. I'd LOVE to see them try and remove me froma freaking public road (even though I have no desire to go now and no longer own a rotary, but I will again someday and I'm pretty sure this event was just removed from my list).

Yeah it's pretty comical lol, and pathetic. Oh well. I might go to Deal's Gap again after this, but I doubt I'll ever attend the event again. Honestly I hope he sells all his rotaries and moves on to some other platform so we can be rid of him. But even if he doesn't, I'll still go drive the road and not pay for or attend the event, somewhat because I want to see him kick me or anyone else off a public road and see the look on his face when the cops tell him he can't do that lol.

In other news, my car got impounded today because I had to prove I had insurance and I was late doing that, so they suspended my registration and the cop impounded the car and took my plates. I should have everything sorted out tomorrow but it still kinda pisses me off. I will be registering in CO once I get my exhaust worked to be quieter. I'm so done with the commie state of Illinois. I'm ashamed to even say I'm from here.

What are you talking about? LOL

Oh are you talking about the Cubs? LOL If so, we don't even claim Chicago, much less the Cubs lol. I'm from Southern IL, we consider Chicago to be Southern Michigan lol. I'm all Cardinals, but they haven't been doing so hot lately either. Their pitching is KILLING them right now. That and the infield didn't want to play Saturday night when I was there either. I went to Friday's game too and they did alright, but Saturday night they wouldn't dive for the ball, barely ran for it. Pissed me off lol.

OK here are a few of the videos I took at Deal's Gap. It doesn't look like I was going very fast, and I probably wasn't compared to some people, but I really wasn't interested in driving off the side of the mountain either lol. In the first video I did lose control at one point but it wasn't too bad. I haven't looked back through it yet to see where it is, but it's in there.

And here are some pics from the trip. Disclaimer: the car is dirty in all of the pics from Deal's Gap. I didn't see the point in washing it while I was there.
