I raced DH and mountain cross on a mixture of platforms and clipless. I ended up running clipless on DH a lot more. I use Time ATAC Z pedals for that application, though it has been a long time since i raced. I used the primo pedals for Mountain cross, ome bmx, skate park, dirt jumping and urban assault/trials. They are not a super light pedal, but the advantage is I never bent one. Also, they are not terribly disastrous to the leg. Unless you commute like I used to, shin damage isn't going to be a problem.
I have never been confused with a racer. I'm fat, slow, and definitely not a strong technical rider. I've ridden gnarly single track before and can make my way down, but I'm the guy everyone's always waiting for. One of my buddies that moved back east a few years back raced DH and XC and I couldn't come close to keeping up with him. Of course, he was about, oh, an easy 50-60 lbs lighter than me too, and much more skilled. I'm just in it for getting outside, enjoying the trails and just putzin' along.
