I personally try to use a 0-20 to 0-30 weight synthetic oil in most modern cars.
A great read about oil weights is here: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/faq.php?faq=haas_articles

For oil itself I use Redline, Joe Gibbs Racing, Torco, and Eneos. Motul is good oil as well.

I used the factory recommended 5w-20 or 5w-30 (can't remember which it was) Pennzoil Platinum in my MS3 and had no issues in 21k miles, though you're not likely to see oil-related issues in that short of a timeframe.

I use 5w-30 (factory recommended) Mobil 1. Who am I to argue with the people the spent millions on research of the car and engine development. I'm definitely not going to believe people on the interwebs or forums (that recommend something other than factory recommended) that had nothing to do with the development of the engine. There are certain things that you can believe... but for oil, I'll stick with factory recommendations.

Congratulations you will love these cars. Also very smart to buy your wife one too. My wife is always stealing mine to do dumb s*%t.

Yo I'mBatman - can we get a slightly bigger image of the oil cap?

haha - but no, I agree with I'mBatman - go with the R&D and use the factory recommended.

Just remember if you start using synthetic-grade oil, then it's a good idea to stick with it and not go back to other conventional engine oil.

R&D isn't always done for the sake of performance, but rather for the sake of saving money, or earning a slightly better EPA MPG rating. Just because the factory does it, doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement. Just sayin'.

The factory usually makes its recommendations based on what "normal" driving is considered to be. This usually has no bearing in reality. We live in a relatively cold climate, and there is absolutely NO need for using 5w oils, and you should always base your oil selection based on your cars needs, which include how much wear it has, what its run times are like, etc.. Let me repeat, there is no real justification for not using a 0w- whatever oil if available in the "hot" grade you need. Read the above article.

Also, Mazda did not engineer these engines to use "thicker" oil. Mazda engineered these engines to use the thinnest oils they could get, but do not recommend them because in general the US market is biased towards heavier oils. You have no idea how many times I hear a guy who develops lifter tick say he is going to put 20w-50 in the engine. Which typically makes the lifter tick worse. Thinnner oils are better for your engine all the way around, and you always want to run the thinnest oil you can.

In my RX-8 engines I use straight 30w Redline. If they were street cars I would use 0-20 or 0-30, depending on climate.

Again, read the article above and really understand what oil grades (not weight- thats incorrect terminology) really mean and how to determine the oil you should use.

I dont get pissed about such things ;)

I just think that there is far too much urban legend and far too little facts being put out these days.
