After school every day we would drive out to the house site and I would work on everything from framing to plumbing to electrical to tarring a foundation. I did get my gas and insurance payed those years so in a way I did get payed. And I had food to eat (nothing like alex). After we put a few hours at the house, we would eat dinner and than I would work on homework late. When we moved into the house, we had a microwave, single electric burner, and we washed the pots in the shower. We has little portable electric heaters. I remember the Christmas we painted the plywood subfloors to look like carpet so it felt like a finished floor and we wouldn't get splinters anymore. I wouldn't take any of it back. I would never have learned how to work on my own house if I hadn't had those experiences.
My childhood was hard but that is another story. No heat though a winter in NY with the back end of the house opened up, grand parents bringing their leftovers so we had dinner, etc.
