What's the longest period of time you've owned a daily driver?

Just curious how long most people hold on to their DD. Project cars have a tendency to stick around so I didn't want someone to say "I've had my car for 32 years!"

I was just going through my old list of cars and discovered of the 19 cars I've owned, my 1996 Yukon stayed with me the longest, at around 4 years. Funny to think that's the vehicle I held on to the longest. Even stranger to think that during that time period (98-05) all I owned were trucks as my primary vehicle. (I did have at least 2, if not 3 cars at a time, though, during that period.)

The rest of my cars average between 1-2 yrs.

00 Ford explorer around 5 years now, bought with 143xxx miles currently has close to 213xxx miles. Honestly this one is my first DD that is my own, but when I was younger and I was still using "daddy's" car our cars wouldn't last long, my dad always got into accidents but none were his fault lol he would get rear ended or side swapped or people would make illegal left turns in front of him so most cars we got rid of were totaled. we hardly sell working cars lol

My wife was driving a 96 Dodge Neon when we got married in 1998 and we had that car until 2006. That one is by far the longest we've owned a single car. I had my SRT-4 for a little over 4 years and if it wasn't for my crappy commute I would probably still have it. Just ran up too many miles on it.

I plan on keeping my Miata and Mustang for a very long time also.

Well I could, but we're getting into overkill at that point. To be honest, I figured most people would be moving in and out of cars much more frequently.

That's what I thought to. I wonder what the average time is though. Like you had your Yukon for 4 yrs and the other 18 cars for 1-2. Wonder if that's the same for most.

Well, you just asked for the longest. There have been a lot of other cars that I've had for a much shorter time. Had my first car, a 95 Ford Escort, for about a year. Had my 90 Civic hatch for about 6 months before I wrecked it. Had an 85 K5 Blazer for 1 month until the guy I bought it from stole it back from me (long story). And recently I only had my MS3 for a year and 4 months. So I've had quick turnover on cars before, but mostly when I was younger.

What got me thinking about it is that I've had the Volvo for almost a year and a half, which is about how long I owned my 6 and 8. Which got me thinking, geez, have I owned anything for longer than 18 months or so.

I've already surmised that with how upside-down so many people are on cars, they move in and out of them pretty quickly. So rather than an "average" number, I wanted to know the longest time they've owned a DD.

I didn't vote since I've only been driving for a year, but I do know this much about my dad's car habits.
I think the 6 was the longest he has owned any car. We got it in FL in September of 05, my dad used it until May of 2010 (which actually ended up being July, since my sister wrecked the Acura he got and it was in the shop until July), and then it became mine until it died which was May of this year. So that would put it at 5 years and 8 months. Oh, did I mention, he got the title for it in the mail 2 hours before I called him and told him that there was metal in the oil and we needed a new engine? How's that for a nice way to rain on someone's parade :p
I don't think he has had any cars for longer.
He had a Pruis for a few months (04 I think?) before he got rid of it because the payments were ridiculous (because of what he stilled owed on his previous car) and there was enough demand for them that he could get what he needed to pay off the loans. That car came brand new off the showroom floor. Also really lucky with this one. Long waiting lists combined with people backing out on buying theirs after it was delivered resulted in a brand new car without waiting the months other people had to wait.
Before that it was an Acura 3.2 CL that he got used, had that for maybe a year before he traded it for the Prius.
Before that, it was a 2002 Mini Cooper that he got brand new off the showroom floor. He got really lucky with this one. There was a 6 month waiting list at the time for a new one, but someone else backed out on buying theirs after it was delivered and it was the exact car he wanted. He kept it for 6 months and traded it for the Acura because the Mini was too small and he didn't want to drive across the country in it (to FL).
Before that, I don't remember. Maybe a VW Passat wagon? He ended up having to rebuild the engine, oil pump died. That's all I remember him having.
My mom was a little different. Her first car I remember was an Audi of some sort. After that, we got her a brand new Chevy Malibu for her birthday when I was young. She had that for a while, and ended up trading it in for a CR-V because she needed the extra room. That was leased and we ended up getting a Honda Pilot after that. That lasted a few years until we came back to CO, and then we got her the 07 Elantra about September of 08 I think. That's her current car.

Long story short: Longest car my family has ever had was the 05 Mazda 6 that lasted 5 years and 8 months.

Wow... so I'm the lone ranger that's never owned a car more than 3 years huh?

The longest I've ever owned a car was my old STI, which I owned for about 2 1/2 years or so. One of these days I'll beat that record... just have to find one I love enough not to leave haha!

In retrospect, I kept my old spouse longer than I've kept any car I've owned (4 years), which is shocking considering I used to prefer spending time with that car (STI) over spending time with her haha! I think that has to do a lot with the fact that getting a divorce is a lot harder than simply trading a car in...

I was most surprised that my Yukon lasted the longest for me. But it was utilitarian, comfortable, and got the job done. Never mind that it was a lemon with $14k in warranty work done to it.
