trade: my 89 rx7 for a protege 5

Postby alex_n/a » Mon Jul 11, 2011 9:14

I really hate to this but I think its time to move on :(

My rx7 is very well taken care of, and I baby this car more than a baby (really) because of the rain I even moved it into my brothers garage. I want to get a Protege 5, If you think you have or know someone that has a protege 5 around the price of 3k let me know. also if you think I won't be able to trade my rx7 for a protege 5 go ahead and tell me, just don't be rude I feel like this is a long shot but hey maybe someone out there really wants a rx7 and has a protege 5 for sale.

My car info

  • 1989 Mazda rx7
  • 143xxx miles (will check exact next time i see the car)
  • rebuilt s5 engine with street port around 22k miles on it
  • blaze red but clear coat is already faded so lets call it almost pink
  • stock fog lights but one bulb is out (uses h3c)
  • brighter headlight bulbs (white/bulbs)
  • aftermarket cobra style rims (rear tires have plenty of thread, front need replace as one is flat)
  • Tein lowering springs/gas adjust shocks
  • power steering removed and swapped with a true manual rack
  • a/c and accessories removed except for the box under the dash
  • cleaned engine bay
  • custom intake mod to move the air filter ahead of the radiator but needs cone filter (currently still use stock air box)
  • Momo steering wheel
  • leather seats with no rips
  • aftermarket oil pressure gauge under the stereo
  • shifter sits much lower than stock so i'm assuming it has a short shifter, the PO told me it did but I never took his word for it.
  • working seat belt tracks
  • new speedometer cable
  • new thermostat
  • working sunroof
  • tinted windows
  • rear wiper (currently doesn't work I think its the switch)
  • rear spoiler
  • modernized tail lights
  • rear carpet and bins replaced (grey) rest is black interior
  • front windshield has the tint strip and in perfect condition no cracks or chips
  • working stock alarm
  • new clutch throw out bearing
  • electric side mirrors working
  • 99" complete interior (needs A pillar, a few broken vents)
  • dash is cracked and the gauge surround is warped
  • I keep it clean and don't like to see dirt on it so it don't have any funny smells lol
  • new battery

anyway 2nd post will include pics and like I said I really really hate to do this, I won't sell it only trade hopefully to a fellow cmzc member who loves this car like I did, honestly this is one great rx7 for its age and not to many around. If I can't get a protege 5 I'll just keep it and finish my wish list.

I think if you come across the right person, you would be able to trade your 7 for a P5. But I wouldn't hold your breath. Most P5s at dealers are in the 8k range, and there are some cheaper on Craigslist.

I think you will probably have to pay some cash on top of your 7 to get a P5 if you find someone willing to trade, so I think you might be better off trying to sell your 7 first then finding the right deal on a P5, especially since you can use your truck inbetween.

Good luck man! Sad to see the 7 go, but at least you're staying with Mazda!

Yeah I'm thinking i'm reaching for the stars but I did find this one. and i'd value my car between 3-4k. It just sucks to see my car parked 90% of the time, not even the gf wants to ride in it, she likes the truck better :/

here is the one i found, that made me make this thread, but like I said I really want it to go to a member here not a stranger.

I hope you are ready for the responsibility that comes with rotaries, checking the oil EVERY time you fill up, popping your hood open after long drives and making people think you are broken down and of course NEVER starting the engine and driving off before it has warmed up even if you are in a rush. oh there is so much to take care of it turns into a child honestly :)

Very true. I've owned 3 total in my life, and I treat my car as my baby. Honestly, Jon, this car is not for you.

Good luck on the sell. If I had the money, I'd totally purchase it. I'd love to have another RX-7 in my hands :)

Of course! I would still use my Subaru as a DD, so I can deal with the extra quirks of dealing with a rotary like checking the oil all the time and letting it warm up.

So is that a yes to giving it to me and I can pay you back eventaully? :p

Conveniently... I happen to have a 2003.5 vivid yellow P5 fully stock and well maintained that I'm looking to trade for something a bit more sporty. The only INconvenient circumstance is that I live out of state. If you would still be willing to trade (I can travel to you, of course) please reply back.

I don't think you have enough post to PM so I'll just post here.

can you tell me more about your p5. Millage, any major problems or small problems, any dents or repaired accidents. Clean tittle? Could you post some pictures.

you are about 16 hours away from denver, but if you are able to drive here I should have no problem trading you.

Overall, the car is very mechanically sound. We recently (within the last 5000 miles) had the entire air and fuel intake systems cleaned and replaced and the hub assembly of both front tires replaced by a dealership and had new Falken Ziex all-season tires put on. In terms of the body I will be honest, there has been some vandalism to the hood in the form of a large paint-stripped dent that I have not had the time to fix. However it has had touch up paint applied to stop rust from forming. The back bumper has a subtle vertical scratch that is only noticeable up close, and the driver-side mirror is an aftermarket replacement due to the before mentioned vandalism. Other than those problems mentioned, the paint is original and in great condition. The car is currently at 137xxx miles and has had all of the routine maintenance done on schedule by the owner's manual. Other than that, the last con is the fact that it is the 4-speed triptronic rather than a true manual, but it shifts very smooth. While there are some cosmetic downsides, all-in-all it is a very clean car. My post may not be a salesman's pitch, but I want to be completely honest especially if it involves driving 16 hours. I can put some pictures up tomorrow if still interested.
