My new 2011 Mazda 3 S

Postby roninsoldier83 » Thu May 26, 2011 9:14

So, as many of you know, I've been talking about trading in my BMW 335xi for a while now, as I'm looking at a pending career change that will drastically reduce my salary, and I'm also looking to buy a house. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED my BMW 335xi, it's a great car; plenty of power, good balance, lots of steering feedback, great brakes, nice interior ect. This was not an emotional move at all, but sheerly a financial move in order to reduce my monthly expenses.

I test drove quite a few cars over the past few months, and eventually arrived at a new 2011 Mazda 3S sport in a 6MT. The car is black, and fairly basic. Of course it's fairly slow compared to my Bimmer, but peppy enough to get around town. It's actually fairly fun to drive, and has the best steering feedback of any FWD car I've ever driven. Overall, for an economy based commuter, I would say it's the best car in it's class, and I say that having driven Civic's, Sentra's, Mini's, Corolla's, Cobalt's, Impreza's ect. Sporty, without being harsh. Overall seems pretty easy to live with, and a pretty good bang for your buck.

While anyone who knows me, knows that I have no brand loyalty to speak of (i.e. the list of cars I've owned haha!), I came back to another Mazda not based on being in love with the brand, but for two very good reasons: IMO, it's the best FWD commuter in it's class, and I just couldn't pass up the value of the vehicle.

I originally was looking at used cars, and looked into a used Mazda 3, but the prices on them just don't drop fast enough in order to justify the purchase over a new one with the incentives Mazda is giving out.

I bought the car via my old buddy & former co-worker Josh Robitaille at Groove Mazda (formerly Burt) off of Arapahoe Rd. Of course since I used to work with the guy, as well as with Chris Chapman (now the new car manager), everything went very smooth, although Josh has always been easy to work with, regardless of who the customer was.

I ended up getting right around book value on my trade-in (slightly higher than NADA clean trade-in value ;) ), and I picked up the MZ3 for invoice. On top of that, I ended up getting an additional $500 Mazda loyalty rebate because I currently own a Mazda haha (go Miata!!). Even further, since I owed more on my BMW than the purchase price of the 3, I paid no taxes (take that state of Colorado haha!). Finally, the kicker that sealed the deal, is that Mazda is giving out 0% interest for 60 months! So yeah, paid below invoice, paid no taxes, got book for my trade and will pay $0 in interest over the next 5 years (assuming I keep it that long haha!).

I just couldn't pass this deal up.... for the same term, my monthly payment went down DRASTICALLY! My insurance also went down, and the 3 gets better fuel economy and take regular gas (vs. premium for the BMW). Based on a total collective savings of all 3 of those things combined, I'm looking at saving around an extra ~$220/month on a brand new car with a full warranty and cheaper maintenance costs! I won't lie, there's part of me that will miss my Bimmer, but at the moment, I'm surprisingly happy with the little 3 hatch.

Either way, it's late at night, and while I'll take good photos in the daytime later, for now, I just took this crappy shot with my iPhone4 cam:

In the past, I've had a knack for trading cars in quickly, so I suppose we'll see how long this one lasts haha!

As a side note, I haven't peeked at my credit in a while now... I've always had good credit, but holy shit, it was never this good! It's usually come in around the 715-730 mark; I know they recently revamped the credit rating system a bit, and it's been a few months since I've checked mine, but tonight it came in at 786! I have a couple basic theories about what could have bumped it up so much, but either way, I'm not complaining haha! Interesting stuff to say the least.

Either way, have a good one and thanks for reading. :)

I think it will be. :)

Honestly, I'm not as bummed out about it as I thought I would be. Likely because I'm used to driving my 335xi like an old lady most of the time anyway haha. While not fast, the little 3 hatch is actually fairly fun to drive. Within the next ~3 years or so, there's a good chance I'll go back to BMW, but next time, I would do it right: RWD version with the sport package haha. Actually if my kid is old enough to where he doesn't have to go in the rear seat, next time around I might just skip the 335i and just pickup a 135i :D

Then again, I might just keep this little hatch as a daily, as it's not a bad car. We'll see how I feel in a few years. :)

Thanks man, and I agree completely. I typically hate FWD cars, but I'm not bothered as much by this one... I honestly don't see how the soul-less Corolla and overrated Civic outsell this car other than by virtue of the badge selling for them based on perceived reliability and slight fuel economy advantage.

Although from what I've read and seen, the new Ford Focus may change that a bit, as it looks like it will be a very competitive car in that price segment.

Thanks buddy! I used to work with those guys, so didn't have to work very hard. Overall, easy to do business with anyway. Josh Robitaille is actually on this board (turbo99jetta), he's a good guy, we go way back. He works Internet sales over there (promotion from where he was at when I worked with him haha!), if you ever need a new ride, hit the guy up. :)

Thanks man. :)

Yeah I know, every time I stop by that place that guy has moved up haha. I'm fully expecting to walk in and see him behind the GM desk one of these days, LOL.

Congrats!
I'm curious, how did you avoid paying taxes? the thought of giving the state/DMV $1500 again is killing me and makes me not want to get another car

Well, I'll still have to pay registration (although the DMV will credit me part of it as I'm transferring the plates from my Bimmer, this is the 4th car these plates will have been on haha!), but when you trade-in a vehicle, typically you only pay taxes on the difference between the two cars.

Basically, if you're buying a $20k car, and they're giving you $15k for your trade-in, you will only pay taxes on the $5k difference between the two. In this case, they gave me more money on my trade-in than the car I was buying, so I owed no taxes since the difference was "negative" per se.

The last car I bought, the trade-in value and purchase price were almost identical, so I paid a whopping $70 in taxes haha! There is a distinct advantage of "trading down"/trading for a car with a lower value than your current vehicle: no taxes. In truth, it's the only advantage to trading a car in vs. selling it private party & buying a new car.

You're getting perilously close to the amount of cars I've owned. Time to get rid of the Volvo, I have had it just over a year...ha.

Congrats on the new ride, and good job knocking down that much out of your monthly budget as well.

Thanks buddy! Slowly but surely, I'm catching you Tim :D

LOL, I've never kept cars very long... with the exception of both of my Subaru's that I kept for over 2 years a piece. I need to stop trading all the damn time haha! Although this time my trade was spurned by logic rather than emotion. It's a pretty big downgrade, but I don't have too much pride to let that stop me from doing what needs to be done. :)

LOL, yeah I keep forgetting to take any as the car isn't anything special, just a normal black Mazda 3 hatch... one of these days I'll get around to snapping a couple pics. :)
