Newbie Lurker - 85 RX7

Postby JerinX » Thu May 05, 2011 9:14

I've been a lurker for some time, and as I just recently rediscovered my RX-7 love. I thought I'd post and introduce myself as I'll most likely be tapping into the community as time goes on.

Two years ago, I rescued an '85 RX-7 from the Springs police impound for $400. At the time it was a vehicle of necessity. Tires were wrecked, had two random spare-like rims on there and 2 regular rims, had no muffler, and it was rough. The car quickly became a passion - went to an online RX7 junkyard (rx7addict's ebay shop, GREAT resource by the way [search rx7addict in google shop]), and the upullandpay here in town. Got a few classic rims to replace the busted ones on there, some extra body parts, gave it some love.

The problem that buried her was one I didn't notice: the thing had been put up on a pretty tall curb or something else big and hard, and the frame was irrevocably bent/damage. There was a slow decline to an undriveable vehicle over the next year. But, the damage was done. First 85 RX-7 put to the graveyard before her time. But, more damage was done: I was hooked.

After a year of saving and scrounging for one in my (minuscule college student) price-range for a side vehicle/daily driver, I found one in Denver just a week ago. Rescued her, and she's beautiful in the she's-seen-more-of-the-road-than-anyone-else way. Dings, dents, and a proper 12A purr.

I'll be coming here to tap into the local knowledge. Right now, I'm waiting on a dipstick from the 'net since it was something that was missing. I don't want to drive her too much without being able to tell how much oil she's eating. I'm not sure how the previous owner managed oil without it, but I'm left uneasy.

To start off, I have three questions:

1) What's the normal oil pressure and temperature for an RX-7, per the default gauges? My oil pressure sits usually at 60, sometimes goes up to just below the hash before the 120. I'm not sure this is right whatsoever, but I don't want to speculate at all before I know from some experienced guys.

2) Transmission woes I need a random outside commentary on.
-Fourth gear has a soft rattling sound when I accelerate. Dunno what it's about, but it has not affected driving yet. It will also whine with a similar rattle as I shift into first.
-The clutch master cylinder and flywheel have been recently replaced, they're fresh and new. In spite of this, the clutch feels soft - it latches on and shifts firmly and with no problem, but there's weak resistance to the pedal. My last one felt firmer.
-Overall, none of these things affect the driveability of it, but...this is my new baby. If something needs done, I'd like to know how gently to treat her until I can get it done.

3) There's about two and a half inches of play in the steering wheel before steering gets affected. I know there's sometimes play, but my last RX felt way tighter in the wheel than this. Is there a way to tighten it up, or am I looking at a potential steering box replacement?

Thanks for reading. My name's Will, and I'm a new-blood first generation RX-7 addict. Please note, I'm also generally a mechanical idiot. My passion is intense, but I've never been a mechanic and it's going to be a long road before I become a worthy one for my car.

Welcome. I can probably answer some of you questions.

1. Normal oil pressure for these motors is 60, 20-30 at idle. I assume you are using the stock gauge, these are usually inaccurate because of the age. I bet the gauge itself isn't showing right.

2. I'd have to actually hear the tranny to give you an idea what is wrong.

3. I'd also need to look at the steering but my guess is it is a combination of a bad box and the tie rods.

I can help you get your car fixed up all you have to do is ask.

1) I'll come out and race once I know things aren't going to go flying off, and all the bits and pieces are generally near the place they should be. Well, actually, I'm pretty easy: that, or when I put a roll cage in and a racing harness so when things do fly off I'll make it out. ;)

2) The Louvers didn't come with it, and I'll probably keep it that way. I might end up replacing the glass on the back end if I can't get the hardware off cleanly. They're not my style, I'm afraid.

3) Chris, I will take you up on that. It's been a long time of saving to get one and enough hedging to afford to get her in shape. I'm itchy as can be to get her worthy of doing terrible and fun things in.

On top of the pressure thing, there's a temperature deal too. I let her warm up and she does so normally (not too fast), but once I start giving her some load she shoots up on the default gauge to the 3/4s-ish mark for a minute before coming back down to just past halfway for the duration of the drive. She idles around 1400, so the fuel/air mixture could be off and she may be running lean. Again, though, I'm not exactly mechanically smart so I'm just saying words at this point. There's a lot of little deals, but that's my kind of RX-7 love.

I'll take some pictures under the hood when I get home (she's surprisingly clean, and I'm pretty proud)

And, of course, I'll spend all day perusing the forums and soaking up what I can. Two of my four finals are out of the way, I have my dream ride once again...I'm feeling pretty itchy.

I should be able to make it. I think it'll be worth it to go out and see some faces and leech some expertise.

I found your parts thread. Once I find out what I actually need, I'm probably going to take you up on a decent amount of it. We'll see what she does or doesn't need, but...yeah.

It was great meeting everyone. Real awesome group, and it was great for the time I was able to stay. I already learned a ton, and I'm now more than willing to take part in anything you guys need that might require some uneducated grunt labor. Just let me know.

Changed the oil today, ordered the moog tie rods off of rock auto...and as soon as the tie rods are fixed and my alignment's straight, I'll be buying the tire set off of Chris. So long as he'll give me a hand getting them on and in order ;)

I went to get my radiator flushed at Jiffy Lube down by me near Astrozon/Academy, and they outright refused - "We can't flush a radiator on a rotary." That's pretty interesting...I didn't realize it was that complex of a system. So, once the tie rods show up I'll try to work on those, and if anyone has advice on a knowledgeable place I can get a flush done, let me know.

A pleasure meeting everyone - and hopefully to many more meeting. Hopefully next time I am young enough to stay up for it.

Can someone with a 12A do me a big favor?

I ordered a dipstick and it ended up being the 13B. No sweat, I very professionally set it to the right length, but I need to know how far up from the bottom of the dipstick the hash marks start, and how long the hash marks are.

And, if my hero could also double check the measurement for me - 10 11/16ths length from the bottom of the grommet that rests on the block - I'd appreciate it.
