Yea, the (newer) Impala SS is a LS1 FWD.

I had it for a rental once... it was stupid. Torque steer like crazy even when you point it straight on the highway.

Haha.
As for the new car, well the 6 is already paid off. I mean I could still get a little bit for it if we sold it, but not much. It just makes more sense to keep this one and put an engine in (especially if we do end up going the 4 banger route) because it will probably be less than a decent used car (unless I do an LS swap or wankel swap, lol). I think even converting to the v6 wouldn't be as much as getting a decent used car. There's only so many options under 5k or so and I can't see this new engine costing more than that, maybe closer to 6k if we do a v6. My first choice for a used car would be an Acura 3.2 CL-S, but that would still be close to 7k or 8k when all said and done. Not many other good cars for the price.

It's not like a 6i with 150k miles is some great irreplaceable car. There are a lot of comparable cars you could get for under 5k and still have a paid off car. I understand you're wanting to upgrade at the same time, but upgrading always costs a lot more than just replacing what you have with something similar.

I just did a search on Autotrader.com for used coupes, sedans, hatchbacks, and wagons for under 5k within 25 miles of 80112 for under $5k and it came up with 309 results. Here's one of the first results that came up. Lower miles, and will definitely be reliable. Just saying, rather than dumping a bunch of money into this car, you'll probably come out much further ahead if you sell this car as is and then get something else. If you can even get $2k out of the 6i and then buy one of these cars, you're still coming out way ahead.

Well another part of it is that I know how the car has been taken care of for nearly it's entire left. We did get it used in 05, but with very low miles. We've had the car since then. Whose to say that another one of those high (well, low compared to my car, but still high mileage) cars won't start having problems? Or that the owner took good care of it? We can put a few thousand into it replacing the engine for essentially a new one and be set for a while, or we could take our chances with another car and hope nothing goes wrong? While it's not something I've disregarded completely, I would also prefer to keep my car that I have now unless the car I get is something I truly want more than my 6 (for example, the 3.2 CL-S again), and just about anything I would want would end up costing more than getting a new engine.

A newer car like yours that was really taken care of wouldn't need the engine rebuilt at 150k miles, but I can see your point of not wanting another used cars potential problems.

Erod has a point about the rebuilt engine... My car has 117k on its engine and it's still running strong. I do my oil changes, do any other regularly scheduled maintenance more than regularly (down to about 3k specifically for oil changes). High mileage engines need more care and attention than newer engines and if they haven't been taken care of then their chances of going bad increase significantly.

With that said, it's something to keep in mind about rebuilding that engine. The block itself will still have that many miles on it and could experience weakening. The internals would be fine since they would be newer but unless you switch out the block you may have issues. Granted, you aren't running boost so the chances of you blowing a block are miniscule. It is still something to consider.

Tough spot... I wouldn't get on your dad about mistreating the car though. There is no direct proof of it and wouldn't want to get you into trouble :)

Well thats why we are going to go for the remanufacuted instead of rebuilt. I'll probably be taking the car to a shop this weekend to have them do a bit more than we were able to last weekend to pinpoint the true source of problems. I don't think I posted it here but someone on 6crew said my bearings are shot and the crank is probably just about done too iirc. So we'll see. Either way I'm hoping to have this done in time for the cruise.

Well yes and no. It's an engine that wasn't mine and has been rebuilt, but it's been completely rebuilt instead of just repairing the parts that fail. At least, that's what everywhere I've read says.

$2500 4 banger or $2700 v6 (plus the costs of extra the other necessary components). I

We're going remanufactured instead of rebuilding the current one because we want this to last as long as possible. Rebuilding whatever is failing now doesn't guarantee that the engine will continue to last without more issues. While remanufactured can't exactly say it will avoid any problems, we're less likely to have problems remanufactured.

Confirmed that I'm going down the 4 banger road again. Next goal? Turboooooooooooooo. You guys can tell me until I'm blue in the face that I don't need it nor should I spend money making a generally slow car into a fast car, but meh :p I wanna turbo it. I doubt I'll ever have all the money I need to get the kit and tune and such, but I can dream can't I :p

I don't think I'll stay 100% stock. I do want some lowering springs and I need new struts/shocks as well as mine are pretty much dead, and maybe a grille. I would love LED tails, but I can't justify spending $400 on just tail lights. Maybe if a set of clear or black ones pop up on 6crew or mazda6club for the right price, but I think that will be about it for me.
Oh, and hood dampers. I <3 hood damper. But that's nowhere near a priority.
Basically, my major mods would be the springs and struts which I'm hoping to get done with the new engine as I really need the struts and the springs would be an extra. Hoping to avoid buying them myself but we'll see. As for the grille, well that's like $50-75, so not much. But again, not a priority.

sounds like a good plan! visual mods should be last priority unless you need to work on the exterior due to updates, or neglect

First thing I want done is to get my bumper fixed lol. Hopefully I can take care of that next month as well. That's the priority before any real mods. Then come the rest of the mods.
