Rebuilding would be less expensive and you could get better rods, pistons and cams in there so it would be stronger at the end of it. I have considered this option for my car and I found it was the only one that would allow me the strength I would need out of the engine to keep it running for another 100k if my engine did go.

The shop that I mention should be able to rebuild your engine. I'll PM you the info when I get to work this morning. The guys that work on my car(s) are certified mechanics from dealers. They just decided to open their own shop. So, it's cheaper and they do good work.

new bottom end or engine is needed.

if you are not experienced(as it sounds) building engines or want the simpliest solution. Order from aminal's guy

That site he is referencing is Powertrain Products Inc. Quite possible that I will end up getting a new engine from there. I wish I could go for a v6, but we'll have to see how much my dad will actually spend on this. He did mention the swap himself, just a matter of if he will spend the extra money on everything else necessary to make it work.

rebuilt/salvage 4-banger: $2,000-3,000
V6: $5000+
Wankel: $3000+
......

What was the question again?? :D

Your best bet is to find a known good replacement engine from a wreaked vehicle, or rebuild what you have. however, after the rebuild you'll probably have more into it that a salvage engine.

Remember my lesson from Saturday: Engine, not "motor"
don't make me back-hand you into last week :D

A remanufactured 4 banger is $2500 from powertrain products (I believe that's without a core refund), and $2700 for the V6. Obviously more goes into the v6 swap than just the engine itself, but still, swapping to a wankel wouldn't exactly be much easier :p 4 banger is cheapest, 6 cyl would be next cheapest because of the availability of the parts because they actually made a v6 mazda6, and then there's the wankel. Well that's just stupid expensive in a mazda6 lol, especially because it's FWD. That wouldn't be any fun!

If the problem is just the cam, couldn't you rebuild the head and replace the cam? Not even touch the bottom end?

At this point it's all just speculation. But considering that the engine has close to 150k miles, we find it best to get a remanufactured engine to ensure the car lasts as long as possible. Who is to say something else won't fail in another 5k miles and end up needing more major repairs?

150k isn't all that many miles for a newer car. You should have gotten 250k+ out of it if it was taken care of.

I'm guessing if you got a remanufactured engine that people would help you install it. Engine install isn't *too* difficult if it's a direct replacement. But you'll need all new fluids and other miscellaneous bits that will add up.

and...given the cost to rebuild the engine.....did the idea of getting a different car ever come up or is that not an option?

That's a good point. If you're already going to spending $3500 or more by the time you buy a remanufactured engine and pay to have it installed, you might be better off just finding another used car for that price.
