If I counted my time then I'd be in the $20K range. But, it is fun to me so I don't count it. :D

edit: it is crazy how things add up


That's a hell of an investment! Although, the car is original to say the least! When just looking at the motor/tranny, it doesn't seem to bad, but you're right, when taking on a project like that, things really start to add up. Next time we have a meet going on, I don't suppose you would mind taking me for a ride in that bugger? :D

LOL... you mean that at first mention they sound like complete opposites, but that they are in fact delicious together and practically made for each other?!? :lol:



On a somewhat related note, I just realized that the NA chassis cars don't employ knock sensors/any sort of knock correction... didn't even consider it previously. While I don't like to rely on knock correction (I prefer to tune the car to not knock under harsh conditions), running without it will be a new experience for me if I ever boost this thing.

Guys running NA chassis turbo'd Miata's: are you guys running standalones? If so, will they accept a knock sensor input/utilize some form of knock correction?

If not, I suppose it's back to the dyno and a set of det cans haha! Actually, I pretty much already decided that if I was going to boost this car, I was going to go back to the wonderful world of running E85 :D I ran the old corn gas for the better part of ~1.5 years in my old STI... that stuff was AWESOME! No matter how much boost I threw at it, no matter how much timing advance I ran, temps didn't matter, TMIC heatsoak didn't matter, that thing just didn't knock.... I even had an inlet hose leak that caused the car to run lean (lambda equivalent of around ~13:1) under full load (~21psi, timing advance in the high 20's at redline IIRC), and still no knock.... I don't miss it for daily driving (going out of way to find pumps, ~190 miles before my fuel light came one, horrible cold start issues ect), but for flogging the car, that stuff was awesome!! If I ever boost the Miata, no doubt in my mind, she'll be running E85 :D [/rant]

The helmet thing was mostly a dig at RX7 Chris. I voted other as well. Find a 1.8 and build it over time. Build it strong but not high strung. Run it N/A while you assemble the turbo. 250 Turbo HP with little weight vs V8 torque. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a V8 Miata, but for me the Boosted Miata at this altitude and with good mileage when driven mild, a good recipie!

It's funny you mention knock because the knock sensors Mazda uses on most rotary cars are such a joke I completely turn them off because they'll employ their correction factor at random times and pull timing when they shouldn't, and then when slight knock occurs (most rotaries don't survive "real" knock) they don't do shit. I've noticed the FD knock sensor is a little more sensitive but holy shit the RX-8 knock sensor was a complete joke.

Most standalones you can wire in a knock sensor to employ a correction factor to timing if you wish. I know the AEM I had for my FD did this.

I forgot the fuel system, too. I have a couple hundred (at least) in it.

Hell yeah I'll take you for a ride. It really is a blast. My 327 is putting down 300+ hp/tq, and I can't wait to finish building the 400 for it. It will be a bolt-in swap, and I should have 400+ hp/tq to the wheels......before the 150 shot. :cool:

Yea I don't even want to add up all the little things I've spent on my Miata because I'm pretty sure I have over 5k in it and it's still basically stock. :\

As for a built 1.8L costing more than boosting a 1.6L, you'd only have the cost of the 1.8 to begin with ($400-700 depending on mileage), and then the cost of the internals (probably about a grand). Other than that, the cost is going to be similar to just boosting the 1.6L, and you'll get a lot more power out of the built 1.8L (with higher boost). I don't know though, being able to break the rear end loose at 2500rpms with a V8 would be a lot of fun too, heh.

I guess I wasn't privy to the inside joke, haha! At this point, after doing a bit more research, I think building a 1.8L for boost seems to be the way to go without spending a ton of cash. A set of low compression forged internals and a decent sized snail will likely be the route I choose. Although, I'm going to reserve final judgement until after I get a couple rides from local turbo & V8 guys. :D

That's funny (in a not-so-funny-way haha). On most Subaru's, most people (including myself) actually adjust the factory knock sensors sensitivity levels to make them more sensitive, and they do a decent job. On pump gas on my old STI, every once and a while I would see my IAM go below 1 (applying knock correction in a certain range) and on rare occasion, on a hot day, flogging on the car would result in a knock count or 2 (rare, but it happened). Although, on E85, my IAM never went below 1, and I never logged KC regardless of conditions.

Which, allowed me to tune the car the way I like to tune: keep adding boost/timing until you hit MBT! I prefer the torque curve to stop me from tuning rather than having to dial back timing advance a couple degrees due to reaching the knock threshold. My Bimmer actually has 4 knock sensors, and many speculate that they're "overly sensitive" (I've seen plenty of timing drops in stock form), which is common, but people do things to these cars that would result in popping a Subaru motor in a heartbeat (blind 25% increases in load without allowing the ECU/DME to see/compensate for the increase in load, relying on the knock sensors to adjust timing), and the funny thing is, it's incredibly rare to hear of a popped N54 motor regardless of what idiotic things people do to them. Although it is difficult to know if they're experiencing a major knock event, as the ECU/DME applies cylinder-to-cylinder timing corrections, so logging timing advance on one cylinder doesn't really say much about what the other cylinders are doing (no EM solution for the N54-Cobb AP, Procede, JB4 ect-can decipher knock sensor data accurately/too many sensors, so "knock" is generally "measured" via timing drops).

What's funny is that even while seeing *3+ timing drops regularly under full load (assumed knock), the plugs look fine, and compression/leak down test results always seem to come back fine on these motors (N54). These ECU/DME's are sick. As a tuner, if you played with one, you would be amazed I'm sure. :) However, Cobb claims it took them 6 times longer to crack this DME than any other ECU they've ever worked on (including the Mazdaspeed ECU's & GT-R ECU), and flashing them with an AP initially takes ~20 minutes (compared to ~5 for a Subaru haha!), as there's a TON of data on them/more tables than I've ever heard of an a factory ECU. I won't lie, I do like their compensation tables & they fact that they actually have a targeted torque load. Sorry for the rant/novel, but as a tuner, I think you would like playing with these cars. :D

I actually already started looking into Standalones for the Miata, and was planning on running the MegaSquirt for ease of installation & use (PnP & interface seems to be pretty intuitive). I'm assuming it will accept knock sensor input, but am still researching... if not, I know the Link ECU's will accept an aftermarket knock sensor, so either way, there are choices. One thing I'm keeping in mind is that the NB Miata's come plumbed with a knock sensor stock.... that, combined with the fact that they have a better flowing head is something that is making me consider picking up a 1999-2000 block to build up (2001+ have VVT/more complex, I'm hesitant).

Either way, it should be an interesting experience.

I just barely bought the car for $2200, and have probably spent close to $2000 on top of that already, just getting the car back up to par.... it adds up quickly, and I haven't even touched the motor yet, haha!

Honestly, if I'm going to build a 1.8L, I'm likely going to just pick up a 1999-2000 longblock (might as well get the better flowing head while I'm at it), so it will be a bit pricier, but I'm sure I could recoup some cash by selling my 1.6L when I'm done, but I get what you're saying, and agree with you. Although I'm sure I would prefer the throttle response/torque curve of the V8 over a turbo 4, but am not sure it would be worth the extra cash to me. We'll see I suppose. :)

I totally missed that there was a 2nd page when I posted last night. If you get the turbo kit from Flyin Miata it comes with an integrated wideband O2 sensor, knock sensor and air intake temperature sensor. The FM II Hydra system does anyway, which will get you around 265whp they say on the stock '99-'00 1.8L without even building it. That turbo kit is $5295 tho.

Hmmm, note to self.... I just noticed they claim "230whp" on an otherwise stock 1.6L... honestly, for what you would get, the price on it is more than fair IMO, seeing as you're getting a Garrett GT2560, manifold, FMIC, piping, injectors, a reputable standalone (even though I've heard tuning Hydra's is a PITA haha), sensors ect, $5k isn't a bad price. I might just start looking for a used FM II Hydra kit in the miata.net classifieds.

Piecing it together yourself, I'm sure a person could come up with something for a lot less cash, but that seems like a proper solution to a "higher" powered turbo Miata. If I find that kit used, I might just pick one up, throw it on the factory 1.6L, and just buy a cheap 1.8L short-block that I can build for when the 1.6L eventually lets go. I'm assuming I would need a new manifold for that kit if I went from a 1.6L to a 1.8L, but that's not a big deal.

All those kits are designed to be upgraded. If I were not doing the STR thing, I would look at the Vodoo II kit a just over $3k. Has most of the power without over stressing the "old" engine. Build a fresh engine, upgrade to the Hydra.

My Miata is a training tool for my learning to drive girls. If I get a second low powered autocross car, I will boost the 99 (or V-8 it).

You make a fantastic point. Something to consider, picking up the Voodoo II kit, and just upgrading to a Hydra later on with a built 1.8L.

I'm sure I'll have lots of fun in STR, but I don't think the old 1.6L NA will be very competitive in that class haha. From what I've seen, the NA's seem to do pretty well in STS, but my car already has a torsen LSD in it, which bumps it right out of STS and into STR, which seems to be pretty dominated by S2000's & NC Miata's.

Should be fun either way, but the NA seems to be more competitive in STS (already bumped out of), CSP (if I decided to stay NA) and SMII.

Not that it matters, but it is something I'm considering as I build the car over time. :)

In the events I've attended in the past six months, there are three S2000's a Toy MR2 and my Miata. Generally, each car has two drivers. There was another Miata, but he moved back to stock class. I race the clock (myself). I am hoping for more growth in this class, and if I could afford it, I would get a 2006+ Miata and give it a try. I know my car and my ability are no match for those S2000 and their pilots. I hope to see other legal cars come out and play (944, 924 and even some RX7-Chris). Once you make the car class illegal, move. Until then, it's a fun class.

One other thing that came to mind. The Torsen is the "diff" to have and you have one. What about looking for an open diff to go along - should be cheap and easy to find one. Looking at the STS rules, and what I know of you car, that is the only thing keeping you out of a class you can be competitive in. A diff swap should only take a couple hours in the garage, and it can be reversed in the future. I see Torsens selling for $400 up, I bet the open diff assemblies are cheap in comparison. Just make sure you know what diff you have first. I think that ad read 94+ torsen swap.

Just a thought, but that gives me reason to look for a STS car myself and open the options for the 99.
