I'm 99% sure we had a second key at some point, but we probably lost it. We might still have it, but nowhere that we know where it is.

Well you better find it or else your gonna get charged even more. U can always buy a switchblade key yourself to avoid that charge but the dealer would.need to program it and that will be more since you have 1 key and they need to hook it up to the big comp.

^You're going to have to unless you know someone who works a dealership and can hook you up, otherwise there is no other way to program a key yourself without a spare.

Don't we all know by now that dealerships charge around $100 per hour for labor? Every dealership. This is pretty much common knowledge. If there was a dealer out there charging $175 per hour for labor, then I can see calling them a rip off.

You're just guessing. I have actual experience. It's NOT a 10-15 min job. Always at least 30-45. And if the PCM won't cooperate it can take over an hour.

It's not the dealer's fault Mazda makes the process such a pain in the *** and makes their keys and remotes so expensive.

You should have done it right the first time.
But still if they charge $100 an hour and its a 30min job do they really have the right to charge you for 30min that they didn't work? Also if it takes them longer than the standard amount of time to do it why should I have to pay for that extra time to? As long as that extra time isn't from something I did to make it take longer I shouldn't have to pay.

I lost my Mazda 3 keys last year when I was in ID still. To get 2 "ignition" keys replaced and one key that just opened my door was 250$ from the locksmith. I could only imagine what it would have cost to get it directly from Mazda. It also took them 2.5 hours to do it, and 1 hour to get to my house. I had to call into work that day too, that sucked, lol

I don't know about Mazdas on this subject, but my mom lost they keys to her Elantra (and ended up finding them like a day later) but we ended up having to go to Arapahoe Hyundai and they cut another key for her car, took nowhere near an 30-45 minutes. Maybe 20 to cut it and program it.

That's Hyundai. I'd be surprised if that car even has a programmable security type key. Mazda's process is completely ridiculous, but necessary. There's no way around it. It involves hooking the car up to the computer, requesting info from the car, inputting that info into a Mazda web based tool, receiving authorization from Mazda, inputting that authorization into the PCM, THEN going through the steps to program the key to the car. It's no fast in and out job. It's a pain in the as.s. But it is what it is, and nobody is to blame except the Mazda engineers.

Make sure you have 3 keys for that Explorer. Those PATS keys aren't cheap either, unless you get some off fleabay. Just like the Mazda, if you have 2, you can program your own 3rd.
