Turn signals on 85 Rx-7 GS

Postby G-Man » Mon Nov 29, 2010 9:14

Trying to get a 1985 Rx-7 GS back onto the street and need turn signal help, please. Ran when parked 14 months ago.
Now, turn signals (and hazard flashers) don't work. Parking, brake and headlights all work fine. Horn and wipers work.
Didn't see any loose or missing fuses under the dash - everything tested fine. We did briefly get it working and then it went away again. No relay clicking or anything like that.
Any suggestions? Thank you.

On my tan car I ran into this problem when I got it going. It turned out I needed to just pull the bulbs and clean the contacts. Also click the turn signals on and off in both directions and the hazards on and off. Do this a bunch of times. Sone times the switched on these car's get gummed up.

Check the blinker fluid. *ducks* A stuck relay after a 14 month sit sounds at least plausible on a 25-yr-old RX-7, naturally the non-solid-state electrical component would fail. :)

It could be the flasher but I've never had one go before. My black car has over 210k and is an '83 and the original flasher still works.

I think I love this forum - the guy with the 2010 car thinks it will be the "non-solid-state component" since _everything_ on his car has more computing power than _anything_ from 1985...
... while the guy with 243 1980s Rx-7s says "hit it with a hammer a few times. That should do it."
I'll try both methods tomorrow and let you know what I find. Thanks!

Hahaha, well, I know what you mean. FWIW, I'm more than a bit apprehensive about some of the automation, particularly the electronic throttle (first car I've owned without a mechanical linkage between the pedal and the throttle body). I do believe in many years' time, these digital systems will both fail and be impossible to source reliable replacements for. I suppose if that's our biggest problem in 20-30 years, we're doing okay though. OTOH, I guess 1980s EFI computers are still holding up... I guess pragmatically, nobody's going to expend much effort to keep a mazda3 on the road beyond an age of 10 years. We certainly don't see much Protege discussion here...

I guess what I was saying was kinda based on irrelevant experience: I know of some 1980s Japan-built ham radios with internal relays for tuning where the relays just sorta crap out after 15-20 years, so it at least sounded plausible that the relay might be the problem. In reality, I really have no idea. :)

I don't think it is a physical issue since the parking lights work, and no dash lights for either the turn signal or hazards. Everything failing seems unlikely.
I'm scared it's the "computer" these have.
My first thought is to run another power lead to, uh, well, um, not sure where... Gonna check the wiring diagram later.

pull the plug to the computer and clean the contacts, pull the plug to the switch and clean the contacts.
