Road Trip!!

OK, so Thursday morning, my son and I take off in the MS6 for a visit to University of Utah in Salt Lake City. I'm teaching him to drive a stick so he can share some driving fun, but I have to admit -- I'm a little nervous about the car. It's apparently long trips at highway speeds that kill the DISI 2.3L and contribute to Zoom-Zoom-Boom, so I'm REALLY hoping we make it without incident. Not sure of our route yet...but I suspect it'll be I-70 through the mountains...WEEE!!!!

good luck with the trip, i-70 is extremely fun this time of year. i went to grand junction to pick up a hood not too long ago, just the drive alone was worth it.

Yup, I make that trip maybe once every year or two. I took the WY route once, only due to my 2WD 4 banger. Otherwise, its been I-70

I've checked Google Earth/Maps, Mapquest, and the GPS function on my droid. All of them said to go I25 to I80. Maybe we'll take that way out there, and do I70 on the way back....

Interesting. I just Mapquested it. MQ says that I-80 is the shortest time and I-70 is the shortest distance.

It also had this note about I-70:
Note to I-70 Travelers in Colorado: I-70 is restricted to one lane in each direction between approximately Dotsero and Glenwood Springs due to ongoing repairs after a rock slide in Glenwood Canyon. Speed limits through this area are reduced to 40mph and vehicles over 14 feet wide are required to detour. These restricted conditions are expected to be in place for several weeks. You can drag your route to find alternative routes around this area. In addition, we suggest you go to the Colorado DOT site for updates on this road project. For your safety, always obey local construction and detour signs.

i heard about the whole freeway zomzoomboom issue. iirc i *heard* apparently its from sitting in vacuum for so long that it sucks up oil from the crankcase and to prevent it is to get into a bit of boost every 20minutes or so and clear it out. i guess its speculation but my buddy errs on the side of caution and follows it religiously

That makes sense...I'll have to go into boost a lot. LOL

^^thats basically the case. The oil vapors aren't removed correctly with the shitty pcv system on our cars so the oil vapors condense in the intake manifold. After the long haul and then exiting you'll most likely get into boost which sucks the oil build up from the intake manifold into the center cylinders (mainly cylinder number 3 iirc) and hydrolocks that cylinder pushing a rod thru the block.


so yes, basically the best way to prevent the large amount of oil build up is to get into boost frequently (who WOULDN'T want to do that) to basically suck smaller amounts of oil thru the motor.

FYI, sounds like your next "mod" needs to be an oil catch can lol.

That's going to KILL our gas mileage, but if it staves off the BOOM, we'll do it. Lex seems to think we'll be all right, so I'm not too worried.
