After seeing prices for a rebuild and prices for having someone rebuild my engine, V8 swap has become one of my options.

My first fd(10 years ago) had an engine built by pfs and I beat on her all day with a t04 and never had an issue. But I see that their rebuilds start at $4600 now.

V8 swap will cost you a whole lot more in the long run.

are you sure about that?

keeping a rotary running is alot more expensive compared to a V8.

thats comparing if they have the same hp.

iani1.1 wrote:well "irons" are technically speaking are "housings." i dont know where they got the term "irons" come from but w/e ill roll with it lol. and yes they can be lapped. "rotor housings" cannot. its impossible.

mines tore apart yet again, gonna go with a streetport and some rx8 rotors and encentric with ra seals. its my 3rd time tearing it apart and i can probably do it with my eyes closed.

also how much is that nitride coating? any good? i was thinkin about sending mine to mazdatrix so they can do that magnetize thingy.

Well Mazda calls them technically "side housings" but most people refer to them as "irons" (sense they are constructed of iron and not aluminum as the rotor housings are), or "plates".

Also, I would be careful with RX-8/Renesis rotors. The seal grooves are radically different, particularly the apex seal height, side seal to outer edge location, and oil cutoff seal location.

I'm not sure if people have tried RX-8 rotors with S4/S5/FD housings/plates (I'm sure someone has) but I do know people had attempted FD and various years of FC rotors in RX-8 kegs and they fail. The thing I would worry about the most is the shorter apex seal depth running over a peripheral exhaust port.

thats not true. The buddy of mine that does the rebuilds and tuning does not have a blown engine to his name at this point (knocks on wood). The largest result for rotary failure is poor mods or tuning. Im not going to mention names but famous does not mean good tuning. Im sure there have been plenty of you have gotten your car tuned and gone man how come im not getting the same power as some of the other guys with my setup.

There are multitudes of rotary powered vehicles that road race for multiple seasons and see nothing but beatings.

On the other hand what kind of power are you looking to get that you will still be cheaper and more reliable than a well built and tuned rotary.

I looked into this due to putting 3 motors in my previous FD. These were all failures due to poor rebuilds.

Here is a list of the LSx motors that you may find and horsepower/price

LS1-370whp-1500-4000 for motor alone depending on mileage
LS2-400whp-3500-5000
LS6-405whp-3500-5000
LS3-420whp-5000-7000
LS7-480whp-pull out a student loan

t-56 1500
clutch 600
hinson kit 3500-7000 depending on options
camaro bell housing-not sure price here you may get with you tremec if your lucky

This is just the basics

best case scenario:

your looking at 7100 dollars for just materials barring any snags and unforseen hiccups that EVERY car build has.

Its your car and your money, im not telling you what to do, just trying to help you from getting in a hole. I looked hard for months at doing this. In the end i figured i could rebuild 2 possibly 3 motors for what I figured it would cost me to do a RIGHT (no cut corner) V8 build.

It's not cheap to do an LSx swap. I just priced out the cost of an LS2 swap for a friend and we priced it at 9k for everything (with us doing the work). My friend compared what it would take to bring his stock 7 to the same power level to the 9k and decided to do the swap. Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-rotor. It just seems situations like the OP are more common than not.

Thanks for the input chickenwafer. Ill look into it.

Voodoo. Now that you put it like that holy crap. Well I think it would be about the same if you include a poor rebuild, tune and parts.

I have a gt4088r twinscroll. Aem standalone.

That is the other issue I have. I would need a professional tune and I dont see anyone locally.

I talked with Hinson today. Their mount kit with driveshaft is 1650 shipped. He said if i was on a budget the 5.3l will line up the same. Just need to get a different oil pan.

5.3l - stock 295 hp and he said with a cam it will produce more hp than the stock ls1.

Local junkyard has one with good compression for $500. Supposedly these engines are a dime a dozen. So if you blow up your engine, you pick up a new one the same day.

100 shot of nitrous or rear mount gt4088r will make more than enough power. lol.

I could prob get him to fly up here and do a few tunes, i need mine retuned as well but i have to do a few things first before he said he would tune it for more power.

If you plan to go this route, let me know. I will give you a hand where you may need it. I've got a bit of experience with these swaps.

Gotta love my NA Carbed 12A motor. I'm on my second motor but the first lasted 185k and almost 25 years. Would have lasted longer but it sat for years.
