FS: Microtech Combat Troodon

Postby chickenwafer » Sun Oct 09, 2011 9:14

Selling my Microtech Combat Troodon Automatic double action OTF (out the front) knife to thin out my collection a little. For those who aren't familiar, a D/A OTF is a knife that "shoots" the blade out the front of the handle both out, and back in.

And also for those who don't know, Microtech is the by far the best OTF Knife manufacture in the world. Made in the USA, Microtech sets the bar for all OTF knifes. The action on the knife is like sliding the bolt action on a rifle- precision machined and accurate. The blade flies forward with a solid thump and retracts just as well. I have noticed that with frequent usage it would need to be lubed about once a month with just 2 drops of so of RemOil (gun oil). You don't want to over-lube it.

The handle itself is machined T6061 aircraft grade billet aluminum, which is then anodized flat black and machined with the Microtech logo, the serial number, and build date. The action lever on the side with plenty of knurling for easy grip.

At the base of the handle is a removable glass breaker/skull cracker that also holds the aluminum pocket clip. The pocket clip has the Combat Troodon logo and name on it, as well as another Microtech logo. The belt clip also sits nearly flush with the handle, so the knife virtually disappears when it's securely clipped into your pocket.

The blade is a special-order, double-sided S30V surgical scalpel grade example with a straight edge on one side, fully serrated on the other side. The blade has a "blood grove" machined in the center as well. The blade is extremely sharp and stays sharp thanks it's S30V construction.

The lockup of the blade, when deployed, is extremely tight. Unlike most OTF knives, the Microtech has extra "latches" at lock the blade not only in the deployed location, but also in the handle. Shake the knife and no baby rattles here, it's locked up. No determinable play in the knife whatsoever.

Finally, the Microtech also comes with the nylon carrying pouch. Secure Velcro attachment to a belt or loop with a plastic clip to secure the knife inside the pouch. Works extremely well, but I never carried it since the pocket clips just works so well.

Some pictures:

Knife and carrying pouch. Due to the flash the knife handle almost looks "purpleish" but it really is flat black in normal lighting conditions:

Serial number on top, Microtech logo center, build date on the bottom. You can see this is still a pretty young knife:

Here is a good YouTube review of the Microtech Combat Troodon. This is NOT my knife, but the same make/model. You can see the blade is not black in this video. This will give those who aren't familiar how these beauties work:

Finally, I am asking $300 OBO, feel free to make offers. I am willing to meet people halfway or most of the way. Will take PayPal, cash, etc.

These knifes retail for around $575 + shipping new, not to mention the legal loopholes you have to go through to get a D/A Automatic OTF switchblade.

Good call. I was going to say something until I saw this. Getting caught with one and not being the above could mean some serious poo.

Dave, I'll have to see if I can afford it after all the car parts I'm buying haha.

So after someone leaves the military/police force, etc, is it illegal for them to carry this? Furthermore, did you serve on one of these forces that it was legal for you to carry it? You don't have to answer that if not LOL.

Yes. It's not a slap on the wrist either... it's a felony here. Although they are legal if you only have one arm.

Not sure but I believe you can apply for specific permits to own an automatic knife. I know you can get a collectors permit to own them, but obviously your in serious poo if caught carrying one. I am also fairly certian that if you can carry a concealed weapon you can own and carry the knife after obtaining again specific permits. Kind of like owning a shotgun with a less than 18" barrel or a select fire HK93, it not that you can't, its just you have to pay extra for the priviledge to do so legally.

CCW won't cover automatic knives, only allows you to conceal carry a handgun or legal knife (if CCW and not CHP). Class 3 I am not sure about. Knives usually don't have serial numbers on them like firearms so I am not sure how it would be handled as class 3 purchases are registered and taxed on every single item. I think* that more or less they are simply off-limits.

Bottom line, you have to be Police, Military, FBI, CIA, or some branch of protective services to own this ;) It's the same "hot water" to so speak as an illegal short barrel shotgun or a set of brass knuckles in the state of Colorado.

If you are retired from either of these branches of service, you are legally covered to own and carry this. The only other loophole is a dealer or collector license.

Like I said, I'm not one for getting into the legality of this knife. Without attempting to be blunt, it's kind of your deal if you choose to purchase.

OK this is what I was looking for, thanks.

At first I thought it was saying that the blade actually shoots out, like a bullet, and you'd have to retrieve it. I can just see accidentally hitting the button and cutting a hole in the bottom of my pocket lol. I also LOL'd at 3:18 hahaha, especially at his response.

Haha, no Eric, it doesn't "shoot" the blade, just opens and closes out of the front of the handle. A knife that "shoots" the blade is a ballistic knife, and they are very, very, very illegal. Like go to jail, do not pass go, illegal, for anyone. No one can carry a ballistic knife.

On a funny note, a ballistic knife is fired by a spring, and is one of the most illegal weapons you can own. But you can have a small arms weapon that shoots a knife blade, but if it does so with gun powder, you can class it as a small firearm, which makes it legal. So, fire a blade with a spring, illegal. Fire a blade with gun powder, legal. Stupid huh?
