New wheels. What do you guys think?

Postby roninsoldier83 » Mon Jul 13, 2009 9:14

So, I've been meaning to pick up a set of extra wheels for a while now. Finally broke down and bought an extra set. Just put them on this weekend.

They are a set of JDM STI Spec C wheels. Wanted to keep it as OEM looking as possible, and liked these wheels. As a bonus, they came with a set of tires as well, Falken 452's with about 8k miles on them. Which was perfect, as I've been wanting to change tire sizes & go back to summers for a while now. They're 235/40/17's, whereas stock is 225/45/17. So, about 10mm wider, and slightly shorter/smaller tire diameter... needless to say, the speedo is a little off haha. However, the speedo is off when bone stock on these cars, so not a biggie. In Japan STI's run 235/45's & I suspect they use the same cluster, as in stock form at around 65mph, the speedo has always read 2-3mph faster than I'm actually going (verified via those speed detectors on the side of the road & my Garmin Nuvi), whereas now it's off by about 4-5mph on the freeway. Not a big deal though, I've always referenced the Garmin anyway.

The juicy details: Wheels are 17" x 8" wide (same as stock), 50mm offset (vs 53mm stock). Because they're OEM JDM STI wheels, they clear the Brembos!! With tires, they weigh a whopping 41 lbs. For reference, the stock wheels/tires weigh in around 45 lbs (still pretty light IMO), so saved about 4 lbs per corner. Also gives a nice little 2% gearing advantage, nice little bonus.

Took a quick pic with my iPhone yesterday, just wondering what you guys think?

P.S. Reason for new wheels: going to use stock wheels for snow tires/these wheels for summers. Tired of using all-seasons.

Thanks guys. I was considering picking up a set of additional OEM USDM BBS STI wheels to use for winter tires, but saw these and couldn't pass them up.

Thanks man! I thought the same thing about the color, the guy I bought them from had them on his STI, that was the same color (steel gray metallic).

Yeah, I'll have to show up at a meet sometime :D

I try not to make it stick out too much, as if the damn foot high wing doesn't do that for me... but, I've never received a ticket since I've owned the car, shocking I know, but since owning this car, it's the longest I've ever went without getting a ticket, so I guess I'm doing a good job. The baby seat in the back & Honorably discharged veteran plate probably help I'm sure haha.

I would remove the wing, but it's just down right expensive... there are 17 holes in the trunk of the STI, and to have them filled, repainted ect isn't worth it... replacement trunks, well OEM (steel) & carbon fiber both start at almost $500, plus paint ect. I would like to pick up the JDM Spec C trunk (aluminum vs USDM steel, saves 17 lbs), but it's around $500 plus shipping from Japan :( Can't justify it ya know?

I hope it's ok to rant in my own thread

Those look good!

I've always been partial to that year of STi, I just love the body styling and performance. I have been tempted many of times to part out the 8 and sell her to get an STI, but part of me just can't LOL.
