I have a problem.. Diagnosis?

Postby Colombia28 » Mon Jun 08, 2009 9:14

Nothing major i hope. I got an oil change yesterday and had them (Sill-Terhar) rotate the tires. Well i get on the highway after and noticed the steering wheel shakes at highway speeds. At first i thought maybe its the craptastic highway and i'm just making up a problem. Well even on the very smooth highway surfaces the wheel shakes abnormaly, and sometimes quite a bit.

I will call them tomorrow, but can anyone offer any possible explenations? Its definatly not normal, and only occurs from around 60+, getting more shaky around 80. The stange thing is its not constant(ish). There are small periods of time when its smooth, but mostly shaking bad. And i can tell you it surely did not do this before the dealer visit. Thanks :)

It's possible the tires that are now on front are not balanced. When they were on the rear, the unbalanced-ness is not as easily noticed since there isn't steering connected to them.

Are the tires directional? I had a tire shop put my winters on backwards once and I didn't check until a week later. Fixed all sorts of vibration in the steering wheel. I also got free tire rotation out of the deal, but I won't ever go back there.

I was going to say check the lug nuts first (although I'd be shocked if Sil Terhar didn't tighten them all). I'd agree with MazdaTom that they are probably unbalanced. Double check but I don't believe Clark has the equipment to balance tires at the shop.

x3 on balance. Sil-Terhar would have screwed up big time if they didn't tighten the lugs. If anything they're likely overtightened.

Thanks for the replies. I doubt its the lugs, but something i will look into. I never thought of the balance issue, but that seems very likely. I will check to see if any wheel weight has fallen off throwing the wheel out of balance.

And yes, the tires are directional and i will be sure to recheck that today.

Thanks all!

Im thinking the tread wear also. Possibly a bad wheel bearing?
