Yeah, I've test driven multiple EVO XIII's & IX's... I actually came close to buying a IX the night before I bought my STI. The motor has more potential, but I knew that to begin with. It came down to a few factors that helped me choose the STI over the EVO:

-I have no plans on making over 400whp haha. I'm pretty happy with 326whp, but I know a quick 20G swap would put down 350-380whp (on E85) with ease, which IMO, is MORE than enough power for a daily driver.

-I'm a Subaru guy. I've loved Subaru's since WAY before they were popular. I used to long after the 98-01 2.5RS before the WRX came to the States. I wanted a WRX for years, and bought one as soon as I could afford one. I like Subaru's.

-EVO's have stronger motors... STI's have MUCH stronger drivetrains. EVO's have sissy clutches, weak transfer cases & the gearboxes themselves aren't too much better. STI's may not have as strong of a motor, but the drivetrain is beefy. People have pushed 700whp on stock STI transmissions, running low 10's ect, without an issue. Granted that's not the norm, but the gearboxes & transfer cases/center differentials are tough. Stock clutches are Exedy and handle a good bit of abuse. When making 450+whp, the first thing to break is half shafts, which are a hell of a lot easier/cheaper to live with than a $3000 transfer case. Go drive both, clutch take-up & shift feel are also better in the STI. To me, that's important.

-On the street, I preferred the STI. The EVO is deceptive fast, you don't notice just how fast you've picked up speed, you just look down at the speedo and say "holy crap, this things pretty quick". The STI has a lot more mid-range torque, and as such IMO, feels faster just due to the kick in the pants feeling it gives you... although it falls off up top. They're pretty similar stock vs stock, but I had more fun in the STI due to it's mid-range torque, and ease of getting the rear end out.

-They both have cheap interiors... both are under-par for their price segment, my MS6 was MUCH nicer. However, the STI's is a little nicer, although I would MUCH prefer the EVO's seats. STI seats=for fat people, not a lot of bolstering. EVO's interior screams "Rubber made".... whereas the STI at least somewhat seems "special" (or special ed lol), with it's blue carpet & seats. People who aren't familiar with it are always like "Blue? WTF?".

Sometimes I think I should have got the EVO just for mod potential, but then I remind myself that sometimes there's more to life than just mod potential haha.

Honestly, if I wanted to try and swing the payment I would be driving a 335xi :) I drove the 135i not too long ago, and well, it was too small (couldn't really fit my son's rear facing car seat in the back), but I LOVED the way it drove! My STI would hand it it's ass on a road course, but BMW's are a GREAT compromise! I love the heavy steering, lots of steering feedback, the deep foot wells, good chassis balance, the shifter was AWESOME- so light and effortless... and then came the crown jewel, that motor! They say that peak torque is available as low as 1400rpm, and they're not joking! It felt like a V8, except smoother. They say they're also underrated, and I believe it. They say they actually make around 330hp, and that sounds about right. People are also making a lot of power out of those cars without doing much to them. Vishnu took a 335i and went 11.8@118mph with just basic bolt-ons & tuning (IIRC, only a cat-back, dual air filters & a tune via Procede on 100 octane).

I'm just too cheap to pay $43k+ for one (335xi) :(

Oh well. Speaking of insurance, I just got a policy renewal notice, and my new 6-month policy is going to be $219 cheaper than my last one due to a couple things falling off my record! Woohoo! It's been over 2 years since I've received a ticket *knock-on-wood*, although I also drive more conservatively than I used to.... define irony: I haven't received a ticket since I bought my STI hahaha. Even with the foot high wing on the trunk & 3" turboback exhaust lol. Although, the exhaust is very stealthy for a 3" turboback, I'm running a Cobb catted downpipe (holy crap, I've grown up as none of my previous cars were catted haha) which helps keep the flames out the tailpipe down (along with noise), along with a Borla XR-1 cat-back, which looks pretty OEM.

LOL @ The douche with the 350Z! I used to own a 350Z... 300whp stock my ass haha. Maybe he can't do math, 287 HP at the crank, minus approximate 15% drivetrain loss, he would be damn lucky to hit 250whp lol (depending on dyno, most 350Z's are usually in the 230-240whp range). Silly kids. Robert K on these boards spent over $20k (a lot of which was on wheels, suspension, stereo ect, not all on motor) on parts for his 350Z to include a JWT twin turbo kit, Cosworth manifold, full intake/exhaust, UTEC, ect, and put down 487whp on MAC's dyno.... 800whp lol, sure. I know it's been done, and can be done, but that kid obviously had no idea what kind of money we're talking about spending to get to those power levels. He's right, a fully built block would be needed, and even at that point, reliability would be in the crapper. We're talking over $20k invested with parts & labor.... and I'm sure he has more than enough cash to drop on that kind of build, you know they're serious when they have "intake & lowering springs" haha.

I hear ya about the rambling lol. It's alright though, it's getting pretty slow today over here :)

You got your head on straight, tbot!

Just remember there will ALWAYS be someone with more power, torque, and money sunk into their car than you, and their car will be faster, quicker, and better. That's why you have to mod for yourself

Aren't Evo's running their power thru stock transmissions? I'm not sure...I know the MR's 6-speed is weak, tho.

I'm not gonna lie, it just makes me a little mad when Evo/STi's can bolt on a downpipe, intake, do some tuning, etc and spend under $4k in parts and run into the 11's. Now I don't get my jollies drag racing but still that's damn quick and with little effort. I've got a better half of $20k in my 8 right now (not just the motor other shit too haha) and I would be STOKED to run anything in the 12's LOL. Sad...

It's like I just said, tho, I could get an Evo 9 and drop $10k into it and potentially have 600-awhp on E85 blah blah blah but there will still be the AMS Evo with 1400-awhp :( Honestly tho I have ZERO intentions of getting that much power, 600-awhp in a street car is just stupid fast.

One thing I have noticed a lot with Evos is shit breaks an ungoldy amount. I had a few friends back in AZ with modded Evos and they were quick as hell when running but that was few and far between. Kinda like FD RX-7's, haha, quick as ballz when running but we all know they break a lot...

In all reality I am sticking with my 8, I still have big plans still such as:
-RX-7 5-speed transmission swap
-Complete E85 fuel system conversion with -6AN fuel hoses, custom CNC billet rails, 650cc primary injectors, 880cc secondary 1 injectors and 1400cc P2 injectors (lots o fuel) and twin Bosch 044 pumps
-Custom built-by-me turbo system with a Garrett GT35R with Tial v-band stainless turbine housing, Tial 44mm external wastegate with dump, and possibly a liquid-to-air intercooler...500-rwhp on the horizon...
-New interior with Corbeau CR1 Wide racing seat, custom rails, and custom built-by-me rear "half" cage with rear seat removal
-RacingBrake BBK up front

That's probably it but that's also a good $10k+ in parts LOL at least I can sell my current turbo setup for a pretty dime. At 500-rwhp I will need new axles and potentially a new rear diff. It's still an unknown since the highest anyone has dyno'ed a Renesis in an RX8 *officially* is 414-rwhp by Esmeril Racing. Esmeril now has a new huge Precision turbo (same size as an HKS T51R!!) with a liquid-to-air intercooler and a bridgeported Renny, he thinks he pushing 500-rwhp but no dyno to prove anything yet.

Honestly my MAF is out of range at about 480-500 grams a second which is under 475-rwhp on a Renesis. So the only options I have at that point is standalone, there are NO PnP options for the RX8 as of now, either, except for a discontinued Mircotech (read: Archaic) that was re-cased and called the Interceptor-X made by the now defunk MazSport. So I would have to do a custom swap for a standalone, I would like to go AEM EMS v2 or Haltech E11v2. Lots of wiring...cry...and I would need to swap to an FD crank angle sensor as well...

I still got plans and I will still prob keep the 8 since a 500-rwhp RX8 would be super sick haha. At least 450-rwhp. I can't even imagine driving it at those power levels...right now 330-rwhp is just crazy and 1st gear is useless...adding almost 125rwhp more??!! Damn I can't even fathom...

oh yeah...and i've never had a fast car before, so its a welcome change even being almost stock (cai and tip). So i'm sure when i get to the point I want I'll be more than happy. Besides, I don't have the kinda money it requires to build any car to the point where it is faster than anyone else...to me its just not worth it.

Anyways...lots of good info in this thread, so thanks to both of you for providing it all, even if it was just a rant :P

Yeah, EVO's typically run stock transmissions. In reality, typically shock load is what breaks drivetrain components... you can avoid a lot of issues by just shifting gently. EVO's don't break too many trannys, but broken transfer cases & clutches are pretty common. Whereas it's rare to hear of STI's breaking anything drivetrain related unless they're making stupid big power... unlike the WRX with it's fairly fragile 5-speed, but that's another story altogether.

We spoke about it above, but when people start getting into those power levels... well, if all I want is to make big power & drag race, I'm likely going to buy an LS1 powered F-body for dirt cheap :D Those bastards haha... a 500whp EVO isn't going to be streetable, i.e. peak boost not coming on until 4500-5000rpm, very laggy, very narrow powerband ect. Honestly, doesn't sound too fun to me, as off boost we're talking about an NA 4-cylinder with low compression pulling a 3200 lbs AWD sedan around... bah, I've driven dyno queens, and they never appealed to me much. Also something many people don't consider, unless they're running E85/meth, most of those big turbo 4-bangers don't make nearly as much power on straight pump gas. When I see things like "500whp on C16", what I think is "350whp on 91 octane" lol.

Whereas, an LS1 powered Trans Am on the other hand... well, without a blower or nitrous, just basic bolt-ons: cam (maybe a port job on the heads), full intake & exhaust and a tune can run low 11's on straight 91/93 octane pump gas:

http://www.dragtimes.com/Pontiac-Trans-Am-Timeslip-11287.html
http://www.dragtimes.com/Pontiac-Trans-Am-Timeslip-11415.html

^^^Ect ect. No worries about broken transfer cases. No worries about the water pump on a meth kit failing. No worries about not being able to find an E85 station. No worries about over boosting/boost spikes/creep. No turbo lag, ect. Ask me which motor I would rather have haha.

Unfortunately, GM doesn't really make a chassis that I would be interested in to go with their great LS-series motors :( I prefer sports cars over muscle cars, I need 4 doors & a usable back seat (have an 11 month old son), and would prefer AWD for Colorado winters. Actually, if it didn't snow here, I would prefer RWD, but since it does snow here... well, I know I can manage with a RWD car with a set of snow tires, but I truly value the Subie when it snows.... I have considered buying a RWD car, and buying a FWD beater for winter, but the wife isn't down with that idea haha (mostly due to a unique parking situation). If she was ok with a winter beater, I might look into something like a Pontiac G8 GXP, as it would be close to what I'm looking for (LS3 power, 4 doors/usable back seat, independent rear suspension, ect), and with rebates are reasonable in the price department.

You're absolutely correct above though: mod for yourself, there will ALWAYS be someone faster. Always :)

ford has started introducing its new ecoboost motors...first one is the taurus sho w/ a twin tubo v6 putting out 365HP and is awd...i know the 2012 f-150s will have a redesigned body that i think looks amazing and has rumors of a twin turbo 6.2L v8 for the lightning replacement :D that should be wicked fun hehe. But then again, not really a sports car :(

Honestly, I've been very interested in the SHO for a while now.... one day I'll go take one for a spin. I wish they offered them with a manual... or at least a dual-clutch option.

Ya I saw the new SHO and it's wicked cool. Direct injected twin turbo V6, all-wheel drive, 365 horses and like 340 ft-lbs of torque? Yes please. What I think would be KILLER is if Mazda reintroduced Mazdaspeed6, dropped in that Ford TT v6 and all-wheel drive, threw in a 6-speed manual gearbox or at the very least a clutchless manual (ala Mitsu's new SST tranny, but a true manual no slushbox). So you would get the power, Mazda handling and looks, and save over 500lbs off the SHO.

Honestly if Mazda did that I would SERIOUSLY consider ditching the 8, haha. I bet that motor is an easy 400-awhp with bolt-ons and tuning and a potential 600-awhp with new turbos, if not more. We all know how overbuilt factory turbo motors are...

I doubt it will happen, but I can dream right? LOL, actually if Mazda made the MS3 a true all-wheel drive system like the Evo and STi have, keep the brute DISI 2.3L turbo 4-banger, make the 6-speed gearbox a little stronger and put reverse where it should be, and I'd be down for one of those. I know a shop in Canada or somewhere Frankensteined the AWD drivetrain from an MS6 into an MS3 but that's a lot of cash to do.

Call me crazy but one of the cars I really like now is the new Cadillac CTS-V. It's got a 6.2L LSX motor with a blower in the valley pushing 550 some odd horses stock, independent suspension, epic brakes, and it laps the 'Ring in under 7 1/2 minuets which is Porsche 911 and Nissan GT-R R35 territory and costs less than both. Plus it's a true 4-door sedan with ample room in the back, leather trimmed cockpit, GPS navi, heated seats, the works.

I will probably keep my 8 as Toy Car #1 and keep it more "realistic" with 450ish-rwhp but I still want my FD 3rd gen RX-7 with a street port, HKS T-51R SPL snail, RE-Amemyia widebody, Work Meister wheels, and 600-rwhp. Toy car #2 haha.

And I've always wanted to build my own car, like completely from scratch. I would make blueprints, the whole nine yards, and then hand fabricated a tubular ladder chassis, independent suspension, and then drop in a twin turbo built LS7 with "at least" 1000-rwhp, linked to a Tremec T56 6-spd gearbox, Cobra rear diff, custom axles. Mid engine, keep weight under 2300lbs. 1000-rwhp/800 ft-lbs of torque, a goal weight of 2100lbs or so, that thing would be just be scary. It's a pipe dream but a dream nonetheless haha.

Damn, those are crazy numbers!

First, I don't think I've EVER seen TQ higher than HP on a rotary, that's insane.

Second, HP is pretty high considering the boost.

Third, which boost controller do you have? What was wrong with it? I have an AVC-R and I was having a similar problem with it feeling like it had twin turbos. I had my boost set for 15psi, and it would pause there, then go up to 19psi if I stayed in it.

I'm still not sure my problem is fixed because I haven't boosted on the new turbo yet. And I'm not 100% sure my vacuum lines are routed the right way since there are about 3 different diagrams for single turbo FDs haha.

Man, I'm WAY late in this discussion, you guys are comparing different cars already haha.

Haha man thanks

My torque wasn't higher than my hp but VERY close, only like 4 ft-lbs off LOL. I think I did a pull of 318-rwhp and 320 ft-lbs of torque tho LOLz

I have a GReddy E-01 but thanks to Eric (OCD) I am strongly considering the Turbosmart EBoost2. I think I finally (almost) have my E-01 dialed in, I had the start boost setting setup all wrong. Now I am bumping up the gain which attempts to hold the boost once you hit it. So I'm hitting 13.5-14psi by 4,000 rpm (my redline is 9,000 btw so it sound like a late spool but it's really not) and I get kicked HARD into the seat- I love it.

Now with my boost controller setup I want to do another dyno run, I'm sure I can eclipse 350rwhp or hit my goal of 365ish. But now I need to get a new transmission, eh
