TFS solves that issue (if you're a MS development shop like us)... most of the time. Auto-get latest when checkout and gated build when check-in. VS2010 and VS2012. Will have the merge the diff if it sees that you didn't have the latest during check-in.

We've solved a lot of that kind of issues when we moved to TFS and VS2010 years ago and now up to TFS2012 and VS2012. Also have automated tests of the latest build of the code daily.

We have TFS2012 and VS2012. He still managed to somehow do it anyway. My guess is he was working offline (something we're not supposed to be doing) and then just checked in his old version.

If you guys are using Gated Check-in Build then he must be checking the Override Check-in box or your Gated Check-in Build definition is not set up to merge the difference.

Yea I guess we're not using Gated Check-in then. I know they've been hesitant to allow merging because that can screw things up too, especially because in this case his stuff needs to be modified to work with mine anyway.

When your car has a cel, traction control light, battery light, tps light and you pull all the codes to figure out the problem, take the steps to fix it and it still keeps your car in "safety mode" (no throttle, won't go past 3000-3200 rpm), so you finally just unplug the wiring harness after hours and everything works fine afterward.

That's that shit I don't like

Sounds like you forgot to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes after fixing things, which is the standard operating procedure to clear CELs for 30 years now. Or am I missing something in your description?

When you go somewhere and all they have is their own state's micro brews-- no Colorado micros to be found. wtf is that all about?

Colorado > other state's micros

My father and his lack of any sort of knowledge or skills when it comes to handling money.
Then: Back in December, instead of letting me take the car to Troy when my sister went to study abroad, he decided to ship it home instead. His reasoning: Taking me off the insurance for 6 months would save money. My insurance for 6 months is a little over $600. Shipping the car home cost $1,000.
Now: My sister wants to bring the car back to Rochester to have during the school year. Shipping it will cost $800 minimum. Add in all the associated costs of hotels, flying to/from NY for me and my sister to move in, and the total cost becomes about $2,400. Letting me drive the car to NY with a friend to move in and then having my sister and mom fly to Albany to pick it up, then drive to Rochester, totals around $1,400. He doesn't want "deal with it" right now. Because clearly waiting is going to result in the cheap hotels getting emptier and flights getting cheaper...

He only really sends one of us ;) Due to said inability to handle money, there's absolutely no way he can afford to put two kids through college, and top tier schools at that (I go to RPI, and my sister goes to the University of Rochester, and both of us have costs of attendance of over $61,000 this year. Thank goodness for financial aid). My father can barely afford to send my sister to school. My grandfather, after 46 long years as a doctor and of also making wise investment decisions, can afford to send me to school without any problems. I only wish there were more I could do to somehow repay him.

I also find it somewhat ironic that my dad's youngest brother works as a Principal and Director at an investment management firm here in Denver that handles around $5.5 billion for 200 or so different clients.

Dang. If I had it to do over, I'd go to college in-state... take care of your first two years at community college, transfer to one of the many great universities we have here for your degree, then ask your grandpappy for a healthy graduation pre$ent. Boom. You just saved your parents/grandparents a crap-ton of money and you made out like a bandit in the end.
