Aftermarket Recirc -- Warranty Issues?

Postby Stealth01 » Tue Jun 09, 2009 9:14

OK, so my wife is struggling with what to get me for father's day. Around the $100-200 range. So I am putting together some suggestions, and I ran across two recirc/bypass valves -- one from FORGE and the other from Turbosmart -- that I may ask for. I thought about BOVs, but I HATE the sound they make -- too boy-racer for me. Anyway, think they would negate my warranty?

What about the TWM Stage 2 short-shifter? Can get that, with bushings, for $159 right now. I wouldn't think it would affect the warranty at all, but you never know....

Also asking for a new radar detector and the XCarlink MP3 adapter...that is, if she doesn't find herself an answer by tomorrow night. :)

The BOV is an easier swap out for dealer visits. (5minutes) I doubt you would have warranty issues with either one though. I'd go with the shifter, thats just me no good reason.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward the short-shifter, too, but when I suggested that I would send her a list of possible gifts last night, she said she wanted to surprise me. Was talking about a bracelet with my name on it...but I think that's a smokescreen.

The BOV/BPV should not effect any warranty, unless it fails of course. If you are having engine problems and are worried about what the dealer will say, then just swap in your OEM one. It only takes 10 minutes to swap it out anyway.

That's what I figured. I am saving toward one of these mods, but I think I am leaning toward the short shifter right now...after the new RD. :)

I would go with the short shifter. I love the one I have on my 8.

Think of it this way:
SS will decrease your shift times.
BOV will make a chirp sound.

As for your warranty I wouldn't worry about either of those mods. If anything happened to your engine (BOV) or transmission (SS) you could swap both mods in and out quickly. Plus the dealer can't void your warranty for an aftermarket part unless they can prove that it caused the problem.

Stealth go short shifter.. Knowing your luck somehow something would happen to a BOV and grenade something under the hood and then a mini elf would come out of your oil dipstick and say there's no more christmas.

Yeah, the clunky shifter is one of the few complaints I have about this car, so I am leaning toward SS. Still have a few months of saving (since I do it with left over $$ at the end of the week), but I'll get there.

Is the SS hard to install?

I think there is an install thread around here somewhere. From what I've heard it is real easy.

Short shifter is pretty easy. I have installed the TWM on my MS3 as well as the Cobb Double Adjustable on my WRX. The only rough part is the C-Clip, but its not too bad. Let me know if you want help with the install if you end up getting this.

I ended up getting the BOV first. Was your redfire 6 manual? If it was just like my old silver 6 man you had to stretch to row those gears they were HUGE. Shifting the speed 6 feels tiny to me, so I'm still very happy with it :)

THanks, man. Trust me, if I buy it, I'll be begging for help installing it, as I am a mech-tard.

No, my old 6S was auto. And I don't really want a BOV...hate the sound. Just a better bypass or recirc to be an improvement over stock.

We'll see what happens. If she doesn't get me the RD, that's where the money will go. If she surprises me and gets it, then the SS will probably be next.

I would get the upgraded rear bone engine mount from Streetunit ($ 119) before anything else. I'm still using the stock shifter with all my mods and it works fine. The lazy shift thumb you feel is from the stock engine mount. The upgraded mount will get rid of all that lag and really tighten up the drivetrain.

A BOV set up in recirc is the same as a BPV. No matter what brand or type of BOV you go with there will be some extra sound. HKS will give you the most VTA BOV sound, but it is still recirculating are back into the intake. I can't speak for other BOVs since I haven't heard them, but my Syanpse one is so much quieter than the HKS.

Either way you decide to go, it is a good choice. The MS6 shifter is a little long for some, and the stock BOV leaks at higher boost for some as well.
