Actually the bigger motors tend towards better milage, as they do not have to work as hard to push the weight around. My Tahoe- 99 with the Vortec 5.7- pretty religously gets 16-18 combined with most of that in-town driving, while the 5.4's are a little worse.
I actually like my Tahoe and have only half-heartedly been trying to sell it.
