Don't get me wrong, the MS6 is a nice car and fun, but it's not what I was hoping for long term. I was really excited to find a forced induction AWD sedan that wasn't a Rubasu, or an EVO. Also the interior is very nice, clean and semi-sporty (MS3 interior is so much better IMO.) I had the hopes of modding it without worries of reliability etc. So now it stays 90% stock.
It's funny, many people talk about the reliability of Audi's and how it sucks. I had many years of very hard driving with a rather large amount of hp and almost no issues. Normal things such as the MAF sensor dying ($65.00 for a new one) crappy stock plastic diverter valves ($85.oo each), and door lock vacuum pump ($340.00). Other than that she never had issues.
Though I had buddies that had nothing but problems that usually cost a pretty penny, over and over.
I guess it's the same with other cars. Some are bullet proof, others are money pits. Hit or miss....

LOL maybe we could have a meet, then have the Air Force "accidentally" drop a cluster munition on our cars while we're all about a half-mile away, playing ultimate frisbee....

I hear ya. I was the same way-- not wanting just another Subie (and couldn't afford an Evo anyway, haha). The interior of the MS3 is great.. I was also intrigued by the 2yr. "limited production", although that notion didn't pan out. For me, I didn't get the car with the intention of modding it...nor am I knowledgable enough (mechanically) to seek a future car to do so. The possiblity of the whole blown motor/smoking turbo is always in the back of my head though.
It is hit or miss, unfortunately I was one of the unlucky ones. I think VAG cars will always be money pits, but that's just my opinion. They do however use quality materials, and their paint quality/hardness is excellent (as opposed to the chipey/crappy paint quality on the Mazdas).
I dig the S-series and the tdi capabilities that they present, but just can't justify the price new price tag:huh:

You guys should own a rotary...you know you're a rotary engine owner (or at least a 3rd gen or RX-8 owner, FB and FC NA motors last forever) when you think 65,000 miles is "high mileage".
Mazda has replaced 2/3 motors in the RX-8's between years 04-05. In 06 they finally got the PCM programing right to keep the motors a little longer. Record thus for a "running" Renesis is 196,XXX I believe, but the motor basically had no compression. That's a funny thing about rotaries, they can blow or basically make no power but still run.
The Renesis wasn't ready for prime-time...Seems the same for the DIZI motors in the Speed cars. Mazda also had a cluster **** with the first MS car they made- the Mazdaspeed Protege. Just a standard Protege motor with a T25 slapped on an a midget intercooler. Those things blow left and right, for no reason usually. Plus they had a slew of other problems, like major hesitation at 4500rpm, boost control issues, etc.

Wow, I had no idea. Swap a GNX motor in it when it goes *boom* ;-)

Yep, they rushed it. Looks like by 2010, they FINALLY have the MS3 going right. Now they'll move on and screw up something else.

I feel the same way as some of the others here. I didn't do enough research before buying the car or I probably never would have bought it. It seems though that since there are so many different variations of who is blowing that it's not really a "these motors can't take the extra power" issue, but that "some of these motors can't take the extra power" or even less since some people have blown stock. And there are fully bolted big turbo cars with 60k+ miles that have never had issues. So the way I look at it is I'm going to enjoy the car while I have it and hope it doesn't blow but if it does it was probably going to anyway. My plan is to drive this car for a few years, keep the miles fairly low by doing most of the commuting to Denver with my Miata, and trade it in and get a used C6 or maybe an Evo X in a couple years.

Crap people- great "discussion". I shopped all of them and got the MS3. I would not want the WRX and not the STi either for what-35K? Silly *** looking, tiny and with a hood scoop the size of the hood. Great car for kids who live in Highlands Ranch. I'm older though and the performance vs price vs etc. etc. won out. However I would agree 100% on two things- AWD MS3 = cool. And I looked real hard at the EVO. Still do..... But then I owned a Mitsu Outback and Eclipse. Daughter has the Eclipse. Good car but the paint is for shit. Lawsuit on that one.... Outback was great but I wanted a car that could get out of it's own way. A AWD with 145HP was not cutting it. But the darn thing drove through anything......

Well, from what I've read, the 2008.5s are the first year that Mazda adjusted for some of the blown engine problems, probably with a reflash. So you might be OK, Ronin.

lol damn 196k on a renesis thats pretty crazy. i agreee, ive blown 2 turbo rotaries so far and with a little magic of atf they can run without any compression whatsoever. with that being said as long as you keep it idling or floor it and keep the boost up a blown rotary is a beast.

Any time you MOD your vehicle you increase the risk for issues. ALso, when you drive like a jack *** and drive your car hard, you also increase the risk for issues.
Most people who buy Mazdas and drive them like a normal vehicle never have issues (unless you drive an RX-8, which unless you drive the piss out of it you will have a ton of issues)
I know a ton of people who own Mazdas. Crap me and my wife alone have had 5. and you Know what? Not a single issues with any of them. Typically the ones in the shop are cars that are owned by 20 something year old kids who think there cars are tuff shit.
I'm not here to put anyone down and Sorry if you don't like what I just said. Just stating what I see on a day to day basis with these cars.
Yes the "speeds" may be performance based Mazdas, however, just like the GTR, its still not a race car. While I worked for Subaru for 9 months, it was the same thing. WRX and STI's in the shop consistently for people that beat the piss out of the car. People that drive them like a car, have no issues.
I'm a VW guy, and believe me, if you guys want a car that has issues buy one. People all over the world know about there shady build quality/reliability, and yet, most of us will buy a another. I know when I get rid of my GLI, I will probably highly consider vw again.
Going back on subject of the original post, I agree with just about everyone else on here. Everything said is probably all RUMOR. I Speak with the Mazda District Manager just about on a weekly basis and have not heard of anything being true to this point on any of it. The RX-7 is about the closest to the True Rumor, and thats still being highly debated. Mazda is seeing such great sales numbers on the Speed 3, they will continue to sell that vehicle.
Everyone complains about it not having AWD. Mazda didn't offer it because of a price point. What can you buy a base WRX for? 26 grand? Good luck finding on equipped that way, as typically most of the dealers add a bunch of other stuff to them, and most people now want the premium package (all weather package and other crap) which pushes the car to the almost 29k range.
A 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 with the Tech package may touch 26,000. Maybe... Typically gonna Fall somewhere in the 25,000 range.
IMO more car for less money. ALL WHEEL DRIVE isn't everything, just learn to drive... Just my 2 cents. :-)
