So is there a way to search the members list for A) people in a given area or B) people with a certain type of car? If not, I think they'd be useful...

Yes there is. When you click on "Members" in the top right, it brings you to the search page. Once again, on the top right, there is a Toggle More Options button. Towards the bottom of that form, under additional options, you can specify Ride or Location.
