Stop Forum Spam

Postby Learjet45 » Tue Apr 12, 2011 9:14

Idk how much of a problem spam is since the mod approval for posts is on, but this might help to weed them out. I've used it on some of my forums, and it works well :)

Have you ever seen any spam on this forum? I've been here for over a year and I think there's maybe been 1 or 2 spam posts this whole time. The mods here do a great job of weeding out spammers.

I know the mods do a great job. It's to make life easier for them :)

Yes, I do Jimmy. I run 2 of my own at the moment, and have run/been an admin on/helped majorly with about 2 or 3 others that I have either shut down or no longer help with.

http://mr.learjet45.us/
http://learjet45.us/clanless/ (dead, still have the database and all the files, just have the other index.html up instead of the regular index.php, doesn't work with index.php though as I got a new domain and didn't bother to change the proper settings to make the site work again)
http://www.strikingsoftware.com/forum/index.php
Another website I have since left completely and is nothing like I had done to it (it's been a long time since I left) called 977th Gaming Community

I think there might be one or two more that I helped with/was admin on at some point, but I don't remember.

I can appreciate filtering out the spam. But, I've been here awhile and I'm about tired of waiting to see if posts get approved. It would seem that some never get reviewed........I just made myself lol since this one may never make it on the board. :D

Does a forum where the top poster has 34 posts really count as a forum? Heh.

And yes, I vote that we install an add-on that stops Ian from posting. That will clean up the spam.

Not really :p But even though those aren't the most active forums ever, the addon (yes there is an SMF version) has caught spammers and blocked them from registering, and I can go in and delete the account/ban the IP, username, email, and whatever else SMF lets me ban (don't remember everything lol) before they can even post.

I myself don't remember how to do this, but there is a way for us (mods) to make you a full member the moment we see you aren't spam. Clearly you are not. I also think it's something like 10 posts and you become full automatically anyhow. PM one of the other mods and they can make you full in 2 seconds. I just can't remember how it works.

Perhaps the 10 post limit should be cut in half?

It should be more like 1. It really only takes one approved post to figure out whether someone is legit or spam. I wonder if we can't change that number..

Great idea! Except, I don't believe that I have the rights to PM. I'll just continue to sarcastically post until I get 10 posts. I'm pretty sure that I already do, but not all of them have been viewed/approved. :shakeshead:
