Ignition question

Hi All,

I have to put a new ignition switch in an 83 RX7. Is it true I basically have to bust open the metal housing? can I reroute some way.

By the way I know nothing about mechanics and just want to learn how to fix my own car.

You should definitly PM RX-7 Chris. He is very knowledgeable and has the same year RX7as you.

I would start with looking at the FSM. I would look at both the '80 and '85 to see which one is closer. If I'm remembering correctly then you don't have to mess with the steering column. The ignition just bolts to the side of the column. The bolts are hard to get to though. Start by removing the two piece plastic cover over the column. I think there are 5 or 6 screws that hold it.

Download the Body Electrical section on the 1985 FSM in that link. Your answer is on page 14 (15-14).

Do you have to have the anti-theft lock on the steering column as part of the ignition. can I just take it off and have the ignition placed some where else, like the lower part of the dash. I know there is a black wire that connects to the back of it, but would it be ok to just disconnect. The reason I want to take it off is because someon drilled out the original ignition key.

A new set up is going to cost 240 bucks and I would like to drive the car now without worrying if I am going to loose steering control or something.

I have already had the steering column down, just couldn't get the steering wheel off as the book suggested.

The ignition will work fine without the lock. Just make sure that it isn't going to lock up on you while you are driving (not sure if that can even happen). I would look for a used ignition, you probably could get one for under $50. Look for one in the junk yard, on ebay, or the parts sale section of RX-7 club. You might be able to find a complete lock set with matching keys so that they all match.

I have looked all over for the key barrel to plug into the ignition switch and no luck.

I think for the time being I am just going to rewire the ignition switch to fit a keyed barrel that I have.

The ignition switch does work fine on its own, the key just won't stay in it.
