CDOT:

Just incase you didn't know...

In winter weather, street crews use magnesium chloride and other chemicals to de-ice roadways. They said those chemicals do damage to your car’s body and paint. “They’ll just eat away at that stuff.”

The Colorado Department of Transportation says magnesium chloride does contain corrosive products and it can damage to your car, so it recommends you wash your car after every major snowstorm.

“I’ve actually talked to a body shop a couple days ago,” said Collins. “They said you should wash the mag chloride off before it even dries.”

A car wash in twenty degree weather might seem crazy, but Collins said ice will melt; chemicals will not. “It’s better to have a little ice on your vehicle than chemicals and things like that.”

That being said, I haven't seen many rusted out vehicles in CO. Head to the northeast, where the roads are white with salt in the winter.

Yeah i fucking hate mag chloride. Promptly after class tomorrow i will be heading to the spray wash place to protect my baby from the evil chemicals.

Oh and since its so cold outside i suggest that if you take your car to a spray wash place, you drive easy to it so that car parts dont get very warm because if you drive like Josh ( )to the car wash place, your car will be very warm when you start to spray cold water onto hot metal parts which could possibly result in cracking/breaking something... so make sure your car isnt to warm before you start spraying ice cold water onto it. And by it i mean things like the undercarriage, the front where water my hit warm car parts.

Don't forget to get the under carriage washed too.

I saw somewhere that the chemical reaction (aka. the rusting of your car) doesn't take place when it's really cold (I think it was in the teens though).

Hey Highlands Ranchers- are there any do-it-yourself carwash places in this "town"? It seems like we lack those and autopart stores.

But anyway, I'm holding off until Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. There is a chance of more snow Monday night.

Yeah I agree...we do lack auto stores and car washes (decent ones). I normally use the new car wash (jet wash/touchless) that's on the corner of Colorado and Siskin (by the Emission place). They keep their water quite warm...

Josh's car looks all nice and clean because its just been sitting, my car on the other hand is now white.. not red anymore. The only thing is I never have time to go wash my car. In the mornings before work I have our son, and he hates when I get out of the car without him, and at night its dark and WAY to cold for me to wash it.

Well I found a spray-n-wash car wash in The Ranch this morning. It's on Plaza and Sante Fe. $2 minimum to start (which is good since that's all I had in my wallett!) for a little over 3 minutes worth. It did an OK job- pretty typical for a spray-n-wash when you don't actually use a brush. My car wasn't too dirty. My wife's VUE, on the other hand, is disgusting since it saw alot of driving duty this weekend. Good news is that except for the lift gate, hood and roof- it has all plastic panels.

Tom, I use that place a lot, hand wash at home then spot free rinse there, @#$$@%#$@ hard water.
I also found the car wash at the conoco on broadway just north of the Ford Dealership does
a pretty good job. It is touchless 5 bucks for the basic. There is also a do it yourself right there
too, but I haven't used it.

The wash at the shell on Broadway, and HR Parkway is the worst, don't ever use it. POS, waste or money....FYI

I usually try to go to a spray-n-wash during non peak times. I'll use my microfiber sponge to wash. I'll put the $2 and soak the car down, get some soap on it, and sponge away. I'd never do that if there were people waiting in line or anything though.

If anyone comes down towards Parker, the carwash on Arapahoe and Peoria $6, it is the WORST.. I refuse to go in there, I usually use the car wash on Lincoln and Jordan, the automatic is ok, but you can wash it yourself too. That's usually where I go, its close to the house, and usually can get in and out of there pretty fast. Except when I have weird drunk guy come up to my truck and want to talk about the color for 15 minutes.. lol
