Boring day, modified my trunk (MS6)

Postby Regulator » Tue Jul 14, 2009 9:14

For those of you who don't know, the rear seats in the MS6 do not fold down like they do in the mazda6. The MS6 has a rear trunk liner & bracing which prevent you from loading large cargo from the trunk to the cabin. The seat release buttons are also hidden.

Stock looks like this:

So I pulled out the rear liner and used an exacto knife to cut the opening (& cut an opening for the rear seat releases). The rear bracing was painted flat black from the factory, so I unbolted those too and painted them metal flake aluminum. Came out pretty good! Now I can use the whole trunk!

Cool! That looks almost exactly like the RX-8's trunk pass-thru area

So did you make it to where the seats now fold down? In that picture, I can see the seam where the seats make their 60/40 split.

Yep I cut an opening in the top of the liner so the seat release buttons are now exposed. Pull on them and the seats fall forward

Interesting, Eric. Now you can carry large, preferably triangular cargo!

lol I was wondering when someone would point that out.

I bet I could remove the bracing and still drive around just fine if I needed the extra space :p

How much weight would that save?

There is an aftermarket brace that replaces the stock setup, and allows for more pass-thru room. Thought it was on StreetUnit, but I can't find it right now.

That work looks good Eric. If it were me, I'd probably clean up the edges to dull them, then paint it black.

So do you release the seats from the liner-opening that you made, on the trunk side of things, or do you release the seats from inside the cabin?
