hand held media blaster

Thinking of getting one of these or something like it to blast my engine bay before I paint it. Thoughts?

I talked to Zico and he said they run out very quickly so you have to keep filling it up all the time, but I can deal with that if I'm only doing my engine bay. I plan to use baking soda since it's water soluble and can be washed away.

They make a huge mess. If you've got an area to contain the mess or out in a field where it doesn't matter......
Have you checked with a media blast center to see what they would charge for blasting the engine bay for you? I looked into it a while back to strip a Model A, and I recall I was quoted around $400 for the body and fenders (inside and out).
I have seen the home built plastic sheeting "Paint Booth". If you took that time to put something like that up, it should help with clean up.

Well I have the car up on jackstands still and I'd rather not move it somewhere to get it done, that's why I'm looking into this. I was planning on doing some kind of little paint booth around the front end to mitigate the mess a bit, yeah.

Thanks for your input! My name is Eric too by the way.

I get called a bunch of things, but I will answer to Eric. If I need to go by Eric #6 that's alright too.

What about an envelope around the engine compartment? I've got one of those hopper/guns in the shop if you don't want to buy one....

Actually I was just talking to Frank about that today...building a little paint booth thing around the front of the car.

Well that's basically the same thing except the one I'm looking at is gravity fed (not necessarily better or worse, just different) and it's about half the price of that one, some of the ones I've seen are anyway. I think that one might hold more media, but either way I was planning on using soda anyway so it's not much different.

That's why I was looking into it. I really didn't feel like sanding by hand.

I can see this turning into fender roller v2.0 LOL.

As I mentioned in another thread, I may be leaving the country again for a couple months or so. Possibly in a week or two and being gone til mid May. This would help me with the purchase of a new engine but it also sucks because I would/will miss DGRR again this year and when I get back in May I'll be trying to build the car again like I did in 09. Oh well. I did volunteer to take my buddy's place so it's my own fault LOL.

Well it would only be a couple months and it would help me pay for a rebuild, so it's not all bad haha.
