Windshield Scratch Repair?

Postby Regulator » Wed Aug 25, 2010 9:14

About a month ago during a rain shower I flipped on my windshield wipers and my drivers side wiper dragged a small twig or sandstones across the windshield and the scratch it created has been getting progressively worse. The windshield wipers are brand new. This scratch is right in my field of vision and its finally pissed me off enough to ask:

Is there any off the shelf product I could use to fix it? Glass repair shops? When I run my fingers across it I can't even feel the scratch :(

Try that Billy Mays stuff!!

I don't know what else could fix a scratch like that but if Billy Mays endorses it it must be true!

Jeweler's Rouge *might* do it. But you're going to have to polish the living bejeezus out of it. It would be worth the saved effort to just get a newie.

Hahaha I will have to look into the Billy Mays stuff. IF HIS NAME IS MENTIONED EVERYTHING SHOULD BE IN CAPS :)

And I just might have to try polishing it till my arms get stuck in the polishing motion because the windshield is perfect besides this one spot.

Any more suggestions?

You can try Bon Ami, as that's good to use on windshields, but I'm not quite sure it'll polish that out. It is an abrasive, though, so it's cheap, worth a shot in my books.

Well I guess I found my solution, I called the same guy up that has done some windshield crack repairs for me and he thinks he can polish it out.

He charges $50 per hour since I'm not going through insurance for this little job. When he finishes up today around 1:00 I'll post a pic of the result :)

Toothpaste is one of the best things for getting scratches out of glass and plastic. Has to be toothpaste, not a gel ect.

I never would have thought to try that! I'll remember that for next time. Speaking of household products did you know that spreading peanut butter on exterior black plastic pieces will turn them shiny black? Something to do with the oils being absorbed by the plastic.. on my exhaust surrounds it works better than the meguiars back to black stuff lol.

Glass repair man is here now, we found out my windshield wiper arm is freaking bent sideways! wtf!

So the windshield got repaired in just under an hour and I'm very pleased with the results! You would never know the scratch was there in the first place :D

This same repair man has fixed windows for us many times, gives estimates over the phone, drives out to meet you to fix your windshield.. real friendly guy, even talked cars with me for minute. He works for Novus Auto Glass, 303-444-4545.

^^ What's the diagonal line going up towards the passenger side that starts right by the driver side wiper?
