20's on an RX-8?

Postby Brahma » Fri Apr 29, 2011 9:14

Starting to look for new wheels and it figures the ones I really like are 20's. I really want to avoid 20's because of lack of rubber and pot holes not adding up to a comfy combo. Anyone know of anyone running 20's on their RX-8? Any real complaints? What does everyone think?

Biggest size I like on non-SUVs is 19" and that's still pushin it for me. 18 isn't bad. 19 is kinda in-between and 20 is too much for me when it comes to looks.

18's are stock on most RX8s. 19's standard on the R3s.

I've seen it before and the max I'd go is 19s. The 20s are way too big and a tight fit.

I know. I'm just saying anything bigger whether stock wheels are 15" or 19" is too big for non-SUVs IMO.

The RX-8 was originally designed for 19" wheels and Enkei (the OEM wheels manufacture) actually made a run of 500 or so OEM RX-8 19" wheels, but a tire manufacture backed out at the 11th hour so Mazda scrapped the 19's and went with 18's. The point of that tale is the RX-8 actually was designed for 19" wheels so it looks pretty good with them...one of the only cars out there where 18"s look small.

That being said, I wouldn't go larger than 19". As you mentioned, you'll need a super low profile tire to fit a 20" decently so yes, one pothole or big bump and you have a blown tire and possibly a bent rim.

Not to mention, there aren't too many "tuner" wheels out in 20" sizes, most stop at 19". So your choice of 20" wheels are mostly SUV/chrome/spinner types which IMO looks stupid on an RX-8 (sports car).

How dare you tell him what to do with his money? You're a HATER!!

LOL

Actually, 19" tires are more expensive than 20" if I'm not mistaken. Although I'm not a fan of wheels over about 18" anyway haha. But if the 8 was designed for 19"s I'd say those would look pretty good.

But Dave, there are SEVERAL cars out there that require larger wheels these days, because the manufacturers keep trying to outdo each other I think haha. It's mostly domestics these days though I think.

Odd, how many company's don't even offer 19's, it seems like the avg is 17's, 18's, and 20's.... There were a few different wheels I was looking at while searching for some summers, and once I would find a design I liked, they seemed to be missing 19" options..

That picture is too freakin big Ian!!!!

19's IMO looks great on the RX-8, but yes, you are limited by tire selection.

I'm not surprised. I was looking for 305/30-18 and 295/35-18 and you can't get those in anything but strictly race tires....they're so exclusive! LOL I really wish companies made more of a range of tires though, even if they don't make so many of them.

And at least that 8 was rocking Nankangs on those 20s! LOL
