I know people who run meth kits (straight meth) and NO intercooler, because the heat evaporation properties of methanol are that powerful. It acts like a chemical intercooler. So you will cool down and create a much more dense intake charge just with water/meth.

The tuning part is required to get the most power of out water/meth. Like I said earlier, if you just install a kit and do no tuning, it's not really going to make you anymore power, but that isn't to say it isn't beneficial. While the water/meth will significantly cool down and create a more dense intake charge, it will also displace fuel and air in the combustion chamber (because water isn't compressible or combustible), hurting overall volumetric efficiency. However, it's nearly a wash due to the cooler, denser, intake charge provided by the water/meth.

Other non-power benefits includes literally steam cleaning the motor from the inside, reducing intake temperatures and thus combustion chamber temperature and pressure which reduces overall engine stress, and can improve MPG.

Plus, if you get KR on hot days, the water/meth should help with that, even without a tune.
